I believe that as long as the Browns don't intend to extend him, they can make this deal and still not set themselves back in the event that it doesn't work out since Garoppolo is still playing under his rookie contract and will be a FA at the end of the year. If he sucks, cut him loose, if he's good, extend/franchise him.

hmm yeah that one year left on his rookie contract would soften the blow, and cleveland could also use it to negotiate a cheaper long term deal right away compared to what he would get as an FA.

because can you really do it the other way (morally) to your "franchise savior"? "yeah we gave up a good 1strounder but we still dont really believe in you, so instead of finally cashing in big, give us a prove it year for $900 000 to see if you can do it for the Browns too - oh and btw, dont get hurt!"
