This is what happened during the friendly played today, fourth quarter (Q4): 5:13 2 and 5 to go on own 41, Niccolò Guarnieri (OC) snaps the ball to Luciano Storti (QB), Luciano Storti (QB) selected Primo Sorrentino (TE/L) as target, the pass goes inner left to the receiver, who catches the ball, Primo Sorrentino (TE/L) sees no OLBs, and gets tackled by Mohammed Hussain (SS/L), no progress (Big I formation vs. 5-2).

And then, in effect, the 3rd down restarted on the same 41 yards: 4:36 3 and 5 to go on own 41, Niccolò Guarnieri (OC) snaps the ball to Luciano Storti (QB), Luciano Storti (QB) selected Enzo Formisano (WR/R) as target, Mastikh Chandra (DE/R) breaks through the line, Scevola Colmagro (FB/R) blocks, this inner right pass goes to the receiver, who catches the ball, Enzo Formisano (WR/R) tackled by Giyas Muhtarov (CB/L), forward progress: 8 yards, New first down (Shotgun 4 WR vs. Dime 4DL MLB 4CB 2SF).

Based on the description this was a pass that was caught behind or at the LOS. So yes, no gain might happen. Where is the bug?

Commentary says the pass goes inner left to the receiver, so it isn't a screen pass (not mentioned) and who catches the ball means the pass has been completed. Not enough, Primo Sorrentino (TE/L) sees no OLBs implies he gains further yardage running and finally gets tackled by Mohammed Hussain (SS/L).

Looking at the stats Primo Sorrentino received 2 pass and dropped none, but yardage corresponds only to one completed pass.

again, there was no progress. bot the play by play and the stats tell it, but you dont believe it It was a 5-2 on D, so there were not many options for the defense...

I trust you, the fact is I never saw such a situation before now, so it sounds strange to me. If TE has been tackled behind or at LOS I guess it was a screen pass, but commentary doesn't mention the word "screen".

I guess it depends on Petes's use of screen here. In reality a screen pass is a play whereby blockers move to get in front of the Receiver. There are plenty of plays where a Receiver is designed to catch the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage, sometimes because of blitz reads, the TE being the designed safety value in many plays giving a QB a quick checkdown on a comeback play. A 0 yrd pass is rare but plausible and should exist in this game.

I think the SS here is the key, because he's diagnosed that play and got into position to make the play. Had he missed the tackle it probably would have been a Home Run.

If he caught the ball exactly at the LOS, we would not call it a screen pass in the engine. And yes, the definition of "screen pass" ...

It was a few seasons ago, but I remember also having a completed pass for 0 yards. I was surprised, but happy to see this was possible. I believe it was inside the opponents 5 yard line, so that made it even more realistic since there was not much room that had to be defended.

It seems that this sort of thing should happen a little (very little) more often. In real life some completed passes even go for a loss of a few yards. But then the play-by-play description should be somewhat better and make it clear that it was just a good defensive play by the safety or other defender(s).

This is the answer I was waiting for. Based upon what you said, and taking into account the explanation of pass play given by the manual, now I can deduce that passes behind the Los are only intended as "screen pass" (from the manual - Screen: behind the Los; Short: 0-10 Yards deep etc.).

I had a lot of these plays stopped for 0-1 yards, it was the main factor in my reducing the money I allocate to TEs other than for blocking reasons.

So I agree it's not a straight up bug by any means ... *but*

5-2 is a pretty rough run D, and every other formation the safeties tend to play "cover 2" style, protecting deep. Would think both for risk vs reward reasons, and just logically ... if there are no OLBs, the tradeoff might be, a short pass to the TE would have more running room than a 0 yarder, before the SS could get there?

Anyways, I had a big discussion thread on this like 1.5 years ago titled something like "TEs not worth it" in the Discussion forum, but can't seem to find it ... where I broke down the average yardage for a 47 Str / 49 Spd TE that was trained to like $160k per u p d a t e range ... and he was ummm ... less than impressive, could've made a great DE from that guy.
