It seems to me that there are two main weaknesses the current game has when it comes to hiring coaches or choosing player positions.
Firstly, as we can hire a finite number of coaches most managers, myself included will train younger players in positions that we have no interest in them eventually playing. For example if I have a promising CB but no CB coach I may train him as a RB or WR to train speed, then move him to DL to train tackling, then QB to train vision, etc, etc. Secondly, I may play the same player on the field as a QB in the CB role to keep the training level high, sacrificing the player to the 'out of position' penalty, in the knowledge that it is a lot less of a penalty than switching his position between QB for training and CB for playing. My solutions to this would be to firstly lower the morale to a high degree for players playing out of position. A hit of, for example, 20 per league game could be a place to start. Secondly, split experience into different positions. In the page for each player is a rating for each position. I think it is possible for that to be expanded on and one for experience to be introduced. Ideally even more specialised, for example, DT, DE and NT rather than a single DL entry. Experience could then be gained as before but with a more targeted experience being given. For example if you play a DL at DE then the DE experience would go up as before, a smaller amount would also be given to other positions such as DT and NT. Then an even smaller amount of experience going to positions such as OLB. No experience would be gained to positions such as QB, WR, K etc. If you were playing a MLB at DE then the amount of experience would be greatly reduced as the player is training as a LB but playing as a DL so the training he is doing would not be utilised. Thirdly, it would be possible to more easily adjust EXP for positions. For example if it was deemed necessary by Pete to increase the amount of EXP for NTs as they don't play as much as DE and DL but would hopefully negate any unscrupulous manager abusing the system to raise EXP artificially by playing their DL at NT to get more EXP. For example, though the NT experience would be increased at a possibly higher level but the DE and DT EXP would not be influenced by this heightening of EXP. The same could be applied for KR and G not influencing RB and CB etc, EXP. Also eliminating the managers taking advantage of higher EXP gains for K and P positions as playing a Kicker would only increase EXP for the Kicking position. It could even be used for STT and STBL. Also, linking experience to the coaching positions. For example if your QB coach is rated 100 than your QBs experience gain would be doubled, but only for the QB position. A coaching level of 75 would be a 50% boost, as a coaching level of 50 is the base level. This would mean a real tactical choice as there would then be a direct choice between which of your positions do you want to have an extra bonus to EXP. That coupled with Pete's limit's on how many players you can have on your roster in a particular position to receive the full training bonus. Obviously it would be down to Pete's discretion as to whether to limit the EXP gain in a game more to allow the EXP not too rise too much. Also a Youth Coach position could also be introduced whose main role would be to train Youth players where the position has yet to be decided and would be used simply for training physical skills and, possibly, vision and positioning. There would be very little to do with EXP gain (perhaps a much smaller boost, but for all positions) but would instead have a slightly higher effect on training physical skills. This would be useful for training unspecified players and could help youth academies while not influencing which coaches you hire for your main team. Also a Youth Coach could work without the need for Facilities. At the moment my understanding is that managers will often have 'The Wind Tunnel' activated purely for the youth team. Having an unaffected coach would free up an extra facility for managers who are trying to build from the youth but find it impacts too much on the training for the seniors. Also it would lessen the impact on the 'senior' coaches who have to train too many youth players, who are more interested in finding their physical caps than actually playing in the position they are training for. I've never been sure whether Pete's position limits for coaches are including youth players or not, but it seems logical that they would be included. Not sure if people will like these suggestions. In my opinion the two most obvious and important are lowering of morale for OOP players, and having EXP position specific ( ie - a QB gets QB EXP not just EXP in general) along with EXP positions being more specific ( ie - DE, DT and NT, not just DL) |
