Test matches are a five day version which in many ways is considered the pinnacle of the sport. Test matches are not just the pinnacle of cricket. They are the pinnacle of sport in general. There has never been any greater sporting confrontation than the Ashes series of 2005. There has never been a greater sporting celebration than the antics of Freddie Flintoff afterwards, going to meet the PM at the end of a drinking session that had began about 24 hours earlier. Cricket isn't just a sport, it is a British institution, and an integral part of any British summer. And the sounds of TMS on the radio, witty and knowledgable, the voices of my childhood. |

I'll offer this American football stuff as the pinnacle instead, and I do like (normal) footy, but cricket is probably third on that list (and then baseball). And I'll agree with everything else you said. As a fellow of a certain age who played cricket for the school team my first real interest in cricket was the 1981 Botham's Ashes, amazing stuff, but 2005 was right up there. Being a proud Scotsman has never stopped me supporting England cricket teams (but only cricket, mind), and don't give me any of that 'Team GB' stuff - hell would truly freeze over if the international cricket team in Britain was known as anything other than 'England'. And for the record, my 15-yo daughter is a master of the iphone, sleeping and being incommunicative in 3-4 different languages. |

Especially as some of the most successful captains of England Test Cricket Teams have been Scottish by birth. |

Best of luck to you. Playing high school football created so many great memories for me. Take advantage while you can.
