Hi all,

As a football fan, but having never played a real american football game (sorry Fincyril & Browka ), I've always thought the toughest position group to understand is the O-Line.

Of course, OT have to set the edges, & the C have to snap the ball, but let aside these basic facts, there's a lot to learn.

Could anyone explain me what are the subtilites between the 5 positions ( taking into account the left & right sides) ?

PS : please remember that as a Colts fan, I haven't be able to see what a good O-Line is

The left and right sides are relevant depending on what arm the QB throws with. We want to protect his blind side more than what he can see coming.

Have a look on google for some madden play screenshots. You'll be able to see each team's specific blocking scheme to an extent and it will give you an idea as to what each individual player does within the unit.

So what I see here is the entire line will just hold their line and the C will be engaged first. Y may be your TE who could engage the pass rush from his side of the field as he runs his route.

Without knowing the defensive front, you can't decipher any of the offensive line assignments from that screen grab. It shows they're pass blocking, but you can't know the techniques required to make this play work at the LOS.

The most basic O-line goals are:

Run Blocking:

1. Explode forward through the target. Shoot your hands inside with thumbs your up. Aim for the numbers or armpits of the defender.
2. Keep your legs moving. Your feet should always be pumping. Feet shoulder-width apart and in short six inch steps, engage with choppy feet.
3. Sink your hips to remain low with your helmet underneath the defender's helmet, but keep head up.
4. When blocking on an angle (down blocking), make sure your OL take a leverage step towards the defender. They will also need their head across the defenders face. Drive through the outside hip/shoulder of the defender.

Pass Blocking:

1. Inside gap responsibility first.
2a. Create a wide base and maintain good arm extension. Hands inside to jolt defender.
2b. Step into the defender (depends on level/ability/scheme. basically, you won't always do this.)
3. Hold ground/Attack the block.

Blocking Schemes:

1. Down blocking - every offensive lineman blocks down. This allows for excellent blocking angles on defensive linemen.
2. Gap blocking - the offensive linemen are responsible for securing their inside gap first. If there is no defender in the offensive linemen’s inside gap, he blocks a defender over. If there is no defender over, the O-linemen blocks down on next defender, D-lineman or linebacker.
3. Base blocking AKA big on big - lineman block linemen and backs block linebackers. In these instances the center combo blocks with the LG or RG before moving to attack the linebacker. (if you ever heard the QB say "## is the Mike", BoB is likely the scheme they're employing.

Nice first summary, and OL play is much more. I guess you cannot explain it in a single forum thread. There are so many aspects of it. But what I love on OL is: you have to rely on the mates left and right of you. You cannot do your job only, and hope it is working for the play .. you have to lend a heloing hand sometimes to the guy next to you, as he will if you are in trouble. And, there is nothing better than having the opportunity of a rush play through the middle where you can do a double block on the NT as example....love these situations...

Thanks for the reply Pete . I wasn't going to initially respond because there is so much you can discuss when talking about the offensive line. I didn't know where to start. I'm going to bookmark this tab and continue to contribute to it over time. IMO, the offense and defensive lines are the most important components to success in football, so I have a lot to say about them.
