As I am new to the game, and I am trying to beat my rival, the Gators, I was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice? What positions should I focus on improving first? Gameplan setting suggestions?

In order to defeat the Gators, you must first drain the swamp...

You should focus on building up your stadium first, otherwise you won't be able to afford the players and coaches you need to be successful.

LOL I like that one ^

And to answer the question, I always try to get a good QB (personal preference, I love the passing game and hate having to rely on running all the time, though it can also be extremely effective as well) so that means emphasis on the OL, WR, and at least one good TE and RB. But QB, OL, and WR are most important in that case. Depends on the style of game you want really, there isn't any set position that you must have strong players in order to do well, I have had terrible QB's and a strong defense and running game carry me through a season, and I have had a great QB and passing attack with a decent defense and poor running game do well.

I tend to focus on a strong passing game, average running game, with a powerful defense, since defense wins championships and all that jazz. I love the thrill of the passing game, but the defense is what will make or break you, it doesn't matter if your offense can put up 45 points a game easy, if your defense can't stop the other team or generate turnovers, you will struggle in games against teams of equal rating and skill, especially close scoring games.

Here is my advice: Read the manual, read my guide, build your stadium and get a mentor.

Your team is in baby-mode right now and needs to develop.
The game mechanics don't allow a very fast development, even the media center did increase the speed for new teams quite good.

If you want to beat other teams, like the Gators, build a good foundation on stadium, coaches, youth acadamy and then let your team grow.

I agree with jack6, he knows his stuff. check out his guide for sure and you will be rocking along in no time. And definitely build up that stadium, get that income, hire better players and coaches, and win some championships. (Ok, it's not quite that easy, but those are the main important steps.)
