In my game settings I have the "go for it on 4th down" settings set to "never" for my league game today. Yet my team continues to try.
 The help box says that this setting can be overridden when using a playbook but I do not yet use the playbook. Help! |

There is a small misunderstanding in your thinking. Of course you are using a playbook. You use the standard playbook each teams gets equipped with. If you enable your playbook editor, you can see these rules. They are very basic, but contain something about 4th downs. It is safe to enable the playbook, as long as you do not edit anything inside your playbook. And if this single 4th down rule annoys you, you could just disable this single rule.
