Has anyone ever thought about owning a real football team or investing in one.

Yes, but financially it won't never happen for myself.

I have a friend with GB Packers shares; and when I was young, another friend had a father who was part owner of a local semi-pro team. I only own virtual teams.

My cousin actually owns a share of the Packers. It’s pretty cool.

I had the change to buy a share when I just started supporting them (my childhood friend from NL lives in Green Bay) but I didn't realise how rare there opportunities were and passed on it

I would love to own a team however it would be hard no to meddle with team affairs.
In England there is a club run by a group of people who bought it. It started with Ebbsfleet Town (via myfootballclub.co.uk). I bought a share as well at the time. That site has gone now and I checked last week and it seems they are in control of Slough now. Pretty cool idea but execution was troublesome to say the least.

wikedia entry on this enterprise
