An old high school football teammate of mine, Jared Lorenzen, unfortunately passed away today at only 38 years of age. I haven't spoken to him since graduation, and I'm not looking for sympathy. But I did want to share a little about him with a football-loving crowd. Here are three of my favorite anecdotes about his high school days:

After a practice, he was goofing around and was kneeling at about the 30 yard line. He took a football and threw it through the uprights. That is about a 45 yard throw using only upper body strength.
In a game against our arch rival, he took a designed bootleg run. About 15 yards later, and dragging 7 defenders, finally an 8th player was able to jump on the pile and bring him down.
In the playoffs, on a drop-back pass, none of our WRs could get open. He scrambled back and forth buying some time and then heaved a pass from about the 10 yard line and hit a WR in stride on about the opponent 40 yard line (a 50 yard pass!) who ran it in for a TD; the WR was open because the defense did not think it possible a high school kid could throw that far.

Getting to play with him was an honor and a pleasure, and he was a great guy on top of it all. Despite all of his success and fame, he always was humble.

I did not know who he was, but I always had a thing for "out of the norm" players. Nice sharing.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Seems he left kind of a footprint, and memories are good. This is what I wish for myself once the time has come.

R.I.P.

Always sad those kind off things

Back in the days when I was playing football in the Netherlands one of my teammates died in a carcrash. The whole team was, in full gear, at the funeral and 6 of us carried the coffin to the grave.

2 or 3 days later we had a game. We all had his number on our helmets. And, as if it should have been, our RB who was one of his best friends, took a sweep left all the way in for a 60+ yard TD on the very first play of the game.

Those storys counter sad eyes with laughing ones, and last forever. Thanks for the share, Doc.

He was always fun to watch and, from everything I've heard and seen about him, a really great guy. Thanks for sharing some memories with us.
