Ah now, this Supercup match at Adamslie Park was the kind of freakin contest the experts had warned us about: close, cranky, and full of lads making a holy mess of tidy plans. With 139851 visitors watching and Hack 'Em Back (dot com) - They don't know it all sponsoring the whole feckin affair, the Glasgow Tigers and Brookfield Ukies gave the crowd a proper old scrap.
Brookfield Ukies won the cointoss and chose to receive, but their opening work was more stubborn than sparkling. Andre Dias found Monty Bradshaw for a key first down early, yet Hubert Cyr soon had to punt. Tavish MacTavish nearly turned that punt into a freakin parade, returning it deep into Brookfield territory and setting Glasgow up beautifully.
The Tigers answered with a pounding drive, Tavish MacTavish and Tavish MacLennan chewing up ground like hungry cattle in a wet field. But then came the first great feckin wobble: Kenzie MacGregor, already near the goal line, was sacked, and shortly after Jim Diehl intercepted him near the Brookfield goal line before racing back with a mighty return. A fine defensive punch, that, and no mistake.
Glasgow still kept coming. James Forbes opened the scoring action with a short field goal after another long Tigers march. Later, Forbes added another field goal after Glasgow moved the chains with sharp throws to Peter Lyons, Bran Watt, and Hendrie Logie. The Tigers were not flashy, mind ye, but persistent as a freakin tax collector.
The turnovers came thick enough to make an old man spill his tea. Billy Lyle picked off Andre Dias and brought it back into dangerous territory. Then, not long after Glasgow cashed in through Bran Watt on a short touchdown catch and Forbes added the PAT, Melrose Mair intercepted Dias as well, giving the Tigers yet another short field. But MacGregor gave one right back when Alden Thayer intercepted him near the goal line and rumbled away with it. Feckin chaos, pure and simple.
Brookfield Ukies finally found their bite before halftime. Dias led a composed drive, spreading the ball around before hitting Domenic Parrish for a touchdown, and Hubert Cyr put through the PAT. That drive felt like Brookfield had stopped grumbling and started playing, which is more than I can say for half the folk in the stands.
After the break, Glasgow opened with a sturdy march featuring Hendrie Logie, Scott MacCallum, Bran Watt, and tough inside work. James Forbes finished that series with another field goal. Brookfield answered with one of their best drives, Bradshaw making catches over the middle and Cyr converting a field goal when the move stalled. Then came the freakin thunderbolt: Dias found Domenic Parrish on a long touchdown pass, and Cyr added the PAT to turn the match into a proper nerve-chewer.
The fourth quarter was a cranky old beast. MacGregor was intercepted again, this time by Harry Purnell, whose return gave Brookfield a grand chance. The Ukies marched right down near the goal line, but Glasgow’s front stiffened like a frozen gate. Hubert Cyr missed a short field goal, and I tell ye, that was the kind of kick that haunts a man in the quiet hours.
Then came another swing of the feckin hammer. Daniel Karr intercepted Andre Dias and brought it back with purpose, handing Glasgow the chance they needed. MacGregor hit Mac Tweed to get close, then Kyle Cameron powered in for a touchdown, with James Forbes adding the PAT. Brookfield tried to answer, driving into Glasgow territory with Dias finding Dylan Carey, Monty Bradshaw, and Vance Ingram, while Vernon Lewis added tough running. But on fourth down, Haywood Canady was tackled short, and the Ukies turned it over on downs.
There were injuries too, because of course there were, this freakin sport being what it is. Barclay Finlay limped in and out more than once, Monty Bradshaw, Jim Diehl, Edison Tate, Marcelo Shockley, Mac Tweed, Grant MacFarlane, and Terry Jefferson all had their names dragged through the injury notes. A hard game, a sore game, a feckin Supercup game.
In the end, after all the interceptions, sacks, missed tackles, field goals, touchdowns, and old-man groaning, the final score was Glasgow Tigers 23 - Brookfield Ukies 17.
