Spain is not UK... unfortunately.

The term "democracy" (the voice of the people) think the government of Spain does not understand in the same way.

Catalonia, a nation with centuries of existence that Spain itself, with a language, a culture, a history themselves, want to vote on 9 November.

Spain does not allow it, saying (among others) that is anti-democratic. Incredible.

I leave you some links to further information (in english) on this process, started quite some time ago, and having a large majority of Catalans in his favor.

Catalan National Assembly

Omnium Cultural

When you say "a large majority of Catalans" are in favor of this do you include the French Catalans or not? I certainly know much less than you do about this situation but from my time in Catalonia (on both sides) I'd say that the Spanish Catalans want independence much more than the French Catalans.

No, this conflict does not affect the "French Catalonia".
The "French Catalans" want more autonomy, but intergrades within France.
The majority of Spanish Catalans want independence from Spain.

Why is it that there are movements gaining popularity in different countries across Europe for independence from their respective countries?

I'd wager it's because most of the European countries went through a colonial, manifest destiny type conquest, and now these 'colonies' comprised of indigenous peoples with their own culture and identity are sick and tired of being part of something they don't want to. As to now being the time that's ripe for this revolution, I couldn't say.
I sure am glad people are waking up and fighting for their independence from their overbearing countries that took them over hundreds of years ago, depending on the country.

You make it sound as if conquest was alien to the world before these nations invented it for their nefarious purposes.

How about joining your French Catalan brothers then? You'd not depend on Spain anymore and I'd quite like FC Barcelona playing in the French league

Don't you know? Everything is Englands fault and the blame can be landed square in the lap of Queen Elizabeth II.

Spain much like Germany and Italy was historically made up of smaller kingdoms or city states. Through a series of marriages, wars or mergers of mutual interest they grew to become one nation.
