I just lost a game where my opponent scored 4 TDs total. One 60 yard pass, and three 80 yard passes. All of the passes were short dump-offs where the initial defender failed to make the tackle and then the receiver waltzed down the field unhindered. I was using a dime against all four of these plays, but I was wondering if the 3-1-7 is more effective at stopping this sort of non-sense.

On one of the bombs, your FS was Blitzing.... Not sure about the other. I'd use 335 over Dime every day

One long play was against the 5-3-3 too.

However there is an issue with breakout plays in RZA....

There are not enough plays in the 15-40 yard range, big plays don't happen often enough (especially rush plays), but equally defenders rarely run down a ball carrier who has broken for more than 15 yards. So when you do break a big play it almost always goes for a TD.

As for which defensive formations to use - it depends on your own personnel, if you have 4 good CBs available then the dime is usually fine. Most of us prefer the 3-3-5 though as LBs are overpowered in pass coverage. MLBs especially seem to be able to all get across the field as fast as Luke Kuechly!

Yeah one of my hesitancies with the dime is that I'm not using my LBs. I was thinking it made more sense to have CBs double covering WRs than LBs because my CBs are generally faster, but the LBs are smarter. Maybe I'll try using the 335 more often. Does it do ok against Shot 4WR?

Yeah I missed that one was a 533. But why wasn't my LB in coverage? 533 vs. singleback spread seems like my OLBs should be in coverage? But the tackle was missed by my safety... If LBs don't cover in the 533 are you sure they cover in the 335?

Yes, I cranked up the SF blitzes for that game. With 6 guys in the backfield I thought it would be safe to send one safety on a blitz... Definitely cranking them back down moving forward. Even if the SS blitzed, where was the FS on the play?

The receivers catching the ball were a lot slower then my backfield guys, so it just seemed really weird that they outran everyone on my team after catching short dump offs.

It's all zone coverage in RZA, and the LBs get the short zones, so yes, unless they were blitzing, they would have been in coverage.

As for chasing down receivers, and relative speeds, the DBs don't ever seem to be able to catch up with a receiver after a tackle is missed.

The LBs cover the receivers as if they were Usain Bolt-esque superheroes, the DBs on the other hand, seem to have the open field speed of shot putters!

This is a football sim and very strange things happen in football - thats the beauty of the game - and RZA does a good job of simming the unexpected and odd mixed with the expected. Like the real game that we all enjoy.

A couple games back I was repeatedly burned on 3rd and long. I was using a dime vs 3rd down single spread. My opponent had a good 3rd down conversion % that game. He repeatedly needed it. and repeatedly got it passing. and it cost me the game. That and couple missed fg's.

Hmm... Seems DBs aren't very useful. Maybe I should have a TE coach instead of a safety coach

Of course they are useful - it's only when they miss tackles that problems tend to arise...

However, if you have some quality DBs who rarely miss tackles, then those problems will arise less often!

My DBs are good quality for where my team is at, and considerably better then the WRs they were facing. They are also all considerably faster than the WRs that outran them. Sure its great if the one guy assigned makes the tackle, but given all the SFs just pick their nose if there are sufficient CBs for coverage, I'm thinking SFs are pretty much useless in passing defenses. They really only seem to serve a purpose on run defenses when you have less guys in the backfield.

Your opponent was having a great game where things go right and your secondary was having bad game. Thats football! The best of the best makes mistakes and lose games too.

I didn't look to where those passes went but I have learned the the dime is attackable in the middle - especially if your MLB is blitzing.
