A lot! If as a WR you can't run a 4.3 or 4.4 example than a lot of teams will be very hesitant to take you. There is the tape of course but in this case that cannot be used as the level is so much lower than college or NFL so for this guy these tests are a make or break exercise.

Here as comparison are the times for WRs at the 2016 Combine: 2016 Combine WR 40 yard dash times

But what I mean is. Is there a lot of players who had great combine scores who actually went on to become the best of the best. Or is it a very small percentage?

While I appreciate speed is very important I would have thought the things you can't measure are MORE important as an athlete. Like the ability to step a player and knowing when to do this and having timing.

It's important to have some athletic baselines when scouting a player so that you can determine his potential. A player doesn't have to fall into line on every test but needs to fall in line on enough of them so a composite for growth is clear. It will come down to the player's ability to learn/display required technique and skill to maximize their athletic traits.

A good 40-yard time might helo, but it is no guarantee for sucess in the NFL. You have to show the speed with pads on and you need to translate straight line speed into game speed. More important than top speed is acceleration and first step quickness. This causes separation from defenders.

Jacoby Ford had a 4.28 40-yard dash time, but only 1050 yards and 5 TDs in 4 years. On the other hand Anquan Boldin had only a 4.70 40-yard time, but an above average NFL career so far.

I won't mind if Vikings take him with one of their seventh round picks. His size and athletic ability is really intriguing. But I have a feeling that some team will reach for him.

I think with his skill set he might go in the 3rd or 4th round.

Coaching in Germany is not that bad. Of course he needs some adjustments and fine tuning on route running, but he seem be be very coachable and picks up new things very fast.

The biggest problem will be the game speed. A play develops much faster in the NFL and reaction is more important. But this transition is also true for colleage players. Many players are raw, when they come to the NFL. SO why not take the risk by taking german.
