Hello everybody !

Since few time I (re)discover some games in retrogaming and I say to myself than it could be fun to discover old US Football games as at this time I was more a Fifa player.

I recently acquired "Play Action Football" on Game Boy and... God it's hard to play, I don't understand yet all the control and there is not so much...

What game could be worth the try in the 90's ? Is the best game on Super Nes (Super Famicom) or Megadrive (Genesis) ?

Genesis had my two favorite "pseudo-football" games of all time:

Mutant League Football (7 on 7, Madden engine '93, but teams full of trolls, skeletons, orcs and what not)

Cyberball (7 on 7 football with robots ... and a crazy deep offense playbook, something like 500 different plays. Also had a unique fatigue/injury system, where you could see various levels of smoke/sparks/fire coming off the bot as it wore out, and if you didn't get it repaired/upgraded, it could explode on a hard hit and fumble LOL)

Outside of those two, back then Madden really was head and shoulders above the other football games at that time and for quite awhile after. You have to go all the way up until 2004, before you run into one that was widely considered better.

"Rewind to 2004. ESPN 2K5 arrived with a superior product for only $19.95. EA panicked, slashing the price point of the Madden game from $49.95 to $29.95. In lieu of innovation, EA went straight for the nuclear option, paying for an exclusive license that shut out the 2K series and any other company that would push EA to do something other than upgrade the game slowly and methodically so that people will plunk down another $49.95 every year into perpetuity."

I loved, LOVED Mutant League Football.

The EA exclusive license was and still is a sad day. The lack of options is a big reason why I don't play console games much if at all anymore.

I played the NFL Gameday series that was on PS1 in the mid 90's - early 2000s. I think Gameday '97 was the one that was a game changer in the series. The other versions weren't as notable.

The game that cemented my love for American Football was the Sega Megadrive game Joe Montana Sportstalk Football.

Man I spend some time whooping my Dad at that game

After their Kickstarter campaign fell flat on it's face (promoted mobile over PC/consoles, and made potential donors think they'd be getting a crappy phone game port) ... it looks like the Mutant League reboot just started the Greenlight process on Steam a few weeks ago:

"Mutant League" seems like a pretty good game. I will search for this game when I will acquire the Megadrive.

"Joe Montana Football" seems to be good to with an ingenous zoom system for console who can't display as much detail than today.

I feel like game on the Megadrive are more "mature" than on Super Nes, less mainstream too.

Today's Madden are almost boring. They are very complexe and when you didn't grow in the US Football culture it's very hard to master. And only 32 teams is not enough for a 60€ game, we need NCAA or other league in the same game.

Yeah it's really a shame the NCAA series died off due to litigation ... I always liked it far better than Madden. Though they were getting awfully obnoxious with the micro-transactions towards the end, I think around circa 2008/2009 PS2 version of NCAA was the sweet spot for me, before EA got *quite* so greedy.

Want to be able to run an online league? $3 please. Want to be able to actually USE the sim features online properly? $3 please. Want to add a pipeline state to recruit from? $3 please. *vomit*

Adding micro-transactions not for extra content, but simply to access *functions* of a game you already plopped $60 down for, was when I stopped buying much of anything from the AAA developers, and started checking out indie games instead. Top it off, with EA unceremoniously dumping the online portion pretty shortly after the following season launched too.
