Hills will provide reviews of the Group 3 & 4 games, here's what I saw in Groups 1 & 2: GROUP ONE Inbhir Narann 23 47 Bonnyriggs Bombsquad So the Bombsquad finish the Group Stage undefeated whereas Narann depart with the wooden spoon. The ‘squad received the ball from the kickoff, marched 81yds down the pitch to score a TD and then stopped Narann in their own half on the return. And that was pretty much the story of the game, though Narann failing to get in from the 5yd line when they were only 14-6 down clearly didn’t help morale. Narann lost the battle in the trenches: 28/36, 32/36, 40/49, 42/49 ….. Missed Block stats. Not too many positves on Defence either for the youthful Narann team, BUT they won the battle of the ST’s. They restricted the Bomsbsquad to a long of 18yds on returns, whilst they averaged 22yds a pop. Obviously the Bombsquads DL were VERY effective, but their OL were good too - opening enough holes to let their 5 RB’s average from 5 - 14yds per carry. A new brand of gloves should be tried before the knockout stage though - all their receivers were very heavy on the drops. DL Pulu, Rahev and Sladek were the main trouble for Narann’s OL, but LB Calvin Pereiro was the standout overall: 1TFL, 1 Sack and 2 Ints. The Bombsquad have a great looking game against the Doleys to look forward to, Narann have a friendly against the Accies....... the Stodgy Porridge Bowl. Firenze Foxes 34 17 Xythos Proctos The Foxes were the masters of control, it wasn't until the 4th quarter that they were forced to Punt, and before that they were comfortable mixing the Run and Pass out of Shotgun 2 and Shotgun 4 for scoring Drives of 9, 10, 10, 12 and 15 plays. QB Mikkel Faeste was very comfortable; 75% Completion rate, 4TD’s, 0Ints and FB Kelly Rush had 25 Rushes averaging 7.3 a pop. BUT Proctos did hold their own against the constant overwhelming force of the Foxes. Proctos QB Hermundsson was constantly on his toes with the Foxes DL over-running the Proctos OL. He got sacked three times, but still managed a good completion rate of 67% and avoided throwing a pick. The Proctos RB’s also had twinkle toes averaging from 4.6 to 9 yds a carry - particularly to be applauded when looking at the horrible stats of their OL. Sadly for Proctos only DL McCracken could make a small impression - 0 missed tackles and 2 TFL’s, and it was here, unsurprisingly, where the Foxes won and Proctos lost the game. A good reassuring win for the Foxes, but much Qudos to the Proctos for a great rearguard action. GROUP 2 Adventurers 17 30 Limerick Lickers The Adventurers got off to a terrible start - they drove right down to the Lickers 6yds line, stalled, missed the FG and then went 3 and Out on their next two Drives. In the second half they went pretty much toe-to-toe, but by then the damage had been done. Very credibly they were neat and tidy on Offence: no picks, no fumbles and 7/9 of the recievers had 0 drops (nice), but it was the disastrous start and their inability to stop the Pass (except for one Int in the 4th Quarter) that cost them the game. By contrast, the Limericks scored on two of their first three possessions and kicked a FG as time expired in the second quarter - the 13 point difference in the score. QB’s Duffy and Lynch might have felt they were in a training game, well protected and with plenty of time to complete 78% and 80% of their passes respectively. FB Aarons might be bench warming for the immediate future - he averaged a very low 1.9yds on 10 carries whilst his FB companion Schreiber averaged 4.8 over 9. Good game for the Limericks to bow out on, I'm sure the Adventurers will be a little disappointed, but we hope they'll be back. Shard End Sharks 31 13 Erdington Doleys So here it was - match of the Group stage. First possession to the Sharks and they get to the Doleys 37yd line, just out of FG Range and have to Punt. The Doleys struggle over 6 plays for a total gain of 3 yds then have to Punt themselves….. it’s not looking good for them at all! Then 4 plays later the Doleys Defence force an Interception, return it 30yds and on the next play throw a 27yd pass to take the lead. Ignore the score, this game lived up to it’s billing. In the second quarter the Sharks pick-up, scoring a TD, and holding the Doleys to a FG with a BIG sack on a third and one. Critically, the FG got the Sharks the ball back with enough time to get into the Endzone for a second time before the end of the half - a four point lead. Tough fought third quarter, but eventually the Doleys, one point behind, get a First and Goal. The Sharks HOLD and force a FG, and the Quarter ends with the Sharks with a one point lead and the ball. The SHARKS get their own First and Goal - and guess what, the Doleys hold and force the FG. They are now 4 points behind. Another exchange of Punts, and then the key moment…. The Doleys HB fumbles the ball away on the Sharks 46yd line. Definition of ‘Irony’ ?? - the HB is called….. Aladdin. After that the magic is gone, the Sharks score another TD, and then a FG after the Doleys have go for it and fail on Fourth down in their own territory. It was a great game, and with 5 mins left, it could have gone either way. A rematch would indeed be a fitting Challenge Cup final - something for the two combative coaches to aim at. You were right. My wide receivers were terrible. My team very rarely has a complete game. There is always some part of the team that is terrible. The game was a lot closer than the score suggests. Looking forward to the playoffs, should be a good game.

GROUP 3
Leeds Celtics vs Hebridean Academicals 44-13 In a game which would have no impact to the fate of either side in this tournament, I expected more of a comprehensive display. Obviously Celtics didn’t get the memo. They went for the jugular of Athos and did it in dominant style. A whopping 584 yards en-route to the win conceding only 229 yards in reply and making the tournament host wait until 4 minutes on the clock to register a touchdown. Something he probably never saw coming so late in the game. The Celtics have been looking to show their strengths and today it seemed like they definitely did that!! All I can really say on this game was the dominating performance shown both sides of the ball. Touchdowns from Hulsey, Hildreth and Lafferty in the air and Bartley on the ground sealed their win, supported well by their special team’s 3 field goal conversions. Academicals were only able to reply with two field goals of their own and a late touchdown for Lewis, trotting in a very impressive 59 yards to do so. Academicals ended their tournament much below their hopes and expectations, but I do believe they will be a much stronger force next time around! Celtics set up a big tie in the playoffs with a statement of intent…they’re not for the taking like their previous scores may have insinuated. GG Celtics. Pitcairn Bounty Mutineers vs Stockport Sabres 13-55 Korbanero set himself up well going into this tie with a well thought out gameplan which was well executed against the Academicals. And no doubt another one was drafted on the galley. Sabres however have their eye on the big prize. And spent the week sharpening their blades to slice apart those who stand in their way. And that’s what they seemed to do here. A dominant display again in a very one sided game in this group. A massive 619 yards on offense led the Sabres to victory despite and impressive 355 from the Mutineers. The Mutineers started will with a field goal and a touchdown from Gonsalves at the death of the quarter to give them the lead from 7-3 down after the Sabres drew first TD blood through Perryman throwing to Bespalov. Second quarter went all to Stockport support though and they returned ten points well with a field goal and a sublime Bespalov touchdown from a well picked Perryman throw to run in from 54 yards, side stepping Safety Mustafa on the way. One score in it at the half. The second half became one to forget for Korbanero as his side only managed a field goal to answer 38 points from the Sabres. It was almost over going into the 4th where they just mounted a bigger offence to seal the massive win and their place in the next round. The prize was theirs and rightfully they celebrated in style, knowing whatever happened in games elsewhere, they face a hugely difficult task against the two sides who would emerge from Group 4. GG Stockport. GROUP 4 Melittlemenon thepitchhitchin vs Torchwood Aliens 38-27 Well if this wasn’t a game to watch this round I don’t know what was! Melittlemen were not feeling too happy with their performances in this tournament and after declaring their usual late season flops I think all interested thought this would be a routing from Captain Jack and his merry men. But not quite!! Donning the Detroit emblem they roared like Lions in the latter stages of the game to seal a win they would have hoped to have gained in the other two games in their group!! The first quarter was an extremely tight one. Neither offence giving much away as they exchanged touchdowns from a Stephenson run in for Aliens and then a Hitchin catch from Cummins side stepping the Safety Seddon on his way in. Melittlemen then took the initiative with a solid drive ending in Owens running in from 4 with less than 2 minutes on the clock. And it is times like these us coaches thank the stars from playbooking the hail mary!! But it wasn’t needed… Stephenson again breaking one tackle and dodging another in his 61 yard run in. It must have been like watching Adrian Peterson in his prime charging for the line as the home side rejoiced at levelling the score with seconds to go. 2nd and 3rd quarters were quiet. A field goal in either for Aliens and Melittlemen with the only touchdown through Montanari and a field goal gained the lead. But the game was decided in the final session. 24-20 was the score. And Torchwood blinked first, allowing Lofton to dink a ball over from the 1 yard line to Omehia. Torchwood then went three and out…the game lost. Or was it. Their defence came up big for the second game running with an excellent pick by Basil Minton on the edge of their red zone, returned for 38 yards. They made the most of his heroics ending with a 6 yard run by Taylor and the converted PAT to bring the game to 4 points again…game on. Melittlemen, although playing for pride, never gave up. And a gruelling drive with many close moments finally sealed the deal with a 5 yard run from their reliable HB Owens. It was too late for Torchwood, game lost and big performance the week before not enough. They’re out. GG Melittlemen to come up big. San Diego Blitzkrieg vs Munich Runners 31-19 The big decider match for this group. With Aliens already falling just before their kick off and the Blitz having a fairly superior points difference it seemed only seeding was to be decided here. So the German powerhouse faced off against an enraged Blitzkrieg line-up who would not have taken kindly to their defeat in the previous round. And what a performance they threw out. There wasn’t a lot to shout about in the first quarter unlike the game in this group earlier in the day, nor the second. A field goal in each for the Runners and a field goal scored and missed by the Blitz only to be boosted up by a 3 yard lob from Gregoire to Quinn. 10-6 at the half and I expect the Runners would be much the happier with this result going into the second half as most teams only hope to be within touching distance at the end of the game, let alone the half. The third quarter is where it all went wrong. This was San Diego, with a bolstering talk from Steve at the half no doubt who came out firing. A very well thought out drive saw them march down in one possession to improve their lead with a 3 yard pass from Gregoire again, this time to Magoro. 17-6 and the Runners did not want to see a very quick 3 and out…especially as it resulted in another good Blitzkrieg drive to run in with HB Orlando. At 24-6 I think the game was done and dusted. A couple of field goals gave them some form of hope before the defence could not quite hold off the Blitzkrieg anymore…Gregoire showed his arm is strong and picked out a 15 yarder to Scotty Quinn. Game to the Blitz. Runners showed their fighting spirit and mucked in for a good drive to see the game out, crossing with 2 seconds to go with a nice pass to fins MacFarlane but it was to be only a consolation. With the yardage difference only being 78 the Blitz showed their precision in possession and that to win games like this you need to make every possession count and count big, punting only once, albeit runners only gave back 3 times!! So it was definitely not a game for defences to shout about with nothing in the sacking department either. Few can handle the Blitz in an offensive shootout and defences need to come up big. Let’s hope the others in the tournament take heed of this. GG Blitz! |

Shard End Sharks (ELO 1130) @ Firenze Foxes (ELO 1119)
Sooooo….. ELO has Sharks as the very slight favourites, but Overall Rating has Firenze with a definite advantage. Ratings would suggest that the Sharks best bet may be through the air but the key for that (and for the running game) will be if the Sharks OL can hold up the Foxes DL. Depth could also be a factor in this game and when second lines are engaged the Foxes again look to have the edge. The Foxes QB Mikkel Faeste has been GREAT over the tournament so far - which is just as well as the Foxes Defense is yet to click fully. So, to state the obvious…. It could all go down to the best Gameplan. A tight one to call: Firenze by 3 Erdington Doleys (ELO 911) @ Bonnyrigg Bombsquad (ELO 906) An even closer match-up than the Sharks/Foxes here. The Bombsquad have the better balanced squad and very impressively beat the seeded Foxes to top Group 1. We like the season stats that show the Bombsquads RB’s average over 5yds a pop and the WR’s all well over 12yds a carry (when they catch the ball). The Doleys OL may have their work cut out in this game, but so far this season they’ve done pretty well, it may well be a question of how brave Hills is in his QB selection - No.1 QB Morrow looks a little flat footed having been sacked 17 times. But No.2 QB Ortega has better stats and their OL obviously like him as he has yet to feel the touch of grass on his a**e. In the past Hills has proved to be a good gameplanner…… can he pull another one out of the bag? ELO says very close, but I’m veering to the Bombsquad: Bombers by 8 Munich Runners (ELO 1089) @ Leeds Celtics (ELO 1198) The Runners have only given up 2 Sacks all season, but it’s not the Celtics DL they’ve got to watch, it’s their LB’s - almost 120 Sacks between them…… ouch. The Celtics finally hit high gear last week, stuffing the Accies and they will be favourite to come out on top here having won their last 5 encounters with the Runners including two this Season in the Elite League. The Runners are no slouches though, QB Hofmann has thrown 103TD’s this season and DL Mason Archibald is over-performing nicely, so there is talent on both sides of the ball…… can Buziano come up with a left-field gameplan? Celtics to triple triumph: Celtics by 6 San Diego Blitzkrieg (ELO 1293) @ Stockport Sabres (ELO 946) ELO is predicting a clear win for the ‘krieg here, but I beg to differ. The ‘kriegs Franchise QB Gregoire has been patchy to say the least this season; 66% completion rate, 75TD’s but 25 Ints and sacked 33 times - it's the Running game has looked more effective if not getting the glory. But this is the ‘krieg and they get the job done…. difficult to stop when they’re on a roll, offensively or defensively. The Sabres have just completed the perfect season in Claymore 1.1 and they have that LB corps that I am dripping a river of green envy over. What is most impressive though is Alg’s game-planning skills, as the Sabres Offence does lack (comparatively) the obvious punch. We’re thinking a possible upset here….. The Sabres to nick it: Stockport by 2 |
