Suggest game engine be tweaked to only allow punting on 4th down. If playbook says punt on any other down then the basic game setting can be used by the engine to choose a play.

Basically think of it as the head coach overruling the offensive coordinator.

Can't see any negatives from this and will stop one method of 'gaming' the system.

This would be for competitive games (supercup, league etc) for friendlies can maybe leave it as is.

Thoughts?

I think the proposed financial and draft punishments are acceptable. I think trying to "correct" bad tactics will just force unscrupulous managers to find other ways to achieve their desired results.

I think this is an excellent idea, there is no reason why a team would ever punt on any other down than 4th and Pete seems to want to combat tanking so this would help him achieve this goal in a more automated way than having to have a manager report the game to him and then him investigate the game etc...

i could live with the change as long it does not affect FG.
as i won several games by kicking before the with 30sec or less to go before half time. on 1st down or 2nd.

That's my only problem with this suggestion to, I worry if messing with punting could also affect FGs

I don't like the idea of prohibiting certain styles of playcalling and I guess punting on 1st down will become unattractive anyways as soon as the tanking penalties become active.

Furthermore: I think that punting on 1st down could be a valid strategy (if executed properly), as it would allow you to focus your whole time and money on defense and special teams and how to generate defensive TDs and field goal situations.

I see no reason to make the engine limiting the gameplan decision of a manager. Really not. And I see no reason to protect anyone from anything. If a manager is going to get caught guilty for tanking in one game, maybe due lack of knowledge or by conincidence, nothing happens.

Tssss I'm way better than this... punting on first down is for tanking noobs. Kicking on every down is the real ****.

Regarding the punting-as-a-strategy:

I don't know enough about math and statistics to make some accurate calculations, but I guess if one took the average turnover rate, average yard gain per drive and the average points needed to win a game into account when planning this strategy and also keeps in mind that he will always have a matchup advantage (as he has the same budget for D + ST as his opponent has for the whole team; not even mentioning coaching advantages and the fact that the manager would have a superior K and P, which translates into field position advantage and a bigger fied goal range), then I guess the results of those calculations wouldn't look too bad.

Can you please clarify this, I'm not sure I understand the last sentence. If a manager is "caught guilty" it means we know he did it so the lack of knowledge part of your sentence confuses me. Do we know he did it or not
