Lack of knowledge, set punt on every down by accident..as example. And no, I'm not digging deeper into it.

Furthermore: I think that punting on 1st down could be a valid strategy (if executed properly), as it would allow you to focus your whole time and money on defense and special teams and how to generate defensive TDs and field goal situations.

This one, dear friend, sounds like a poor excuse...really poor.

Tssss I'm way better than this... punting on first down is for tanking noobs. Kicking on every down is the real ****.

Regarding the punting-as-a-strategy:

I don't know enough about math and statistics to make some accurate calculations, but I guess if one took the average turnover rate, average yard gain per drive and the average points needed to win a game into account when planning this strategy and also keeps in mind that he will always have a matchup advantage (as he has the same budget for D + ST as his opponent has for the whole team; not even mentioning coaching advantages and the fact that the manager would have a superior K and P, which translates into field position advantage and a bigger field goal range), then I guess the results of those calculations wouldn't look too bad.

I contemplated this strategy when I was struggling with my offensive playbook. Eventually, I figured out how to build something a smidge above terrible. I still wonder how good a team could become if it were designed this way though.

Now, try to imagine that NFL coach, entering the stage at season start...

"Coach, your strategy?"

"Win everything"

"So who's your QB?"

"Don't need one"

"Runningback?"

"Why should we have on?"

"Hm, Receiver, Tight Ends, O-Line?"

"No!"

"How are you going to win EVERYTHING then?"

"Look at this monster here, he is our kicker..."

Seriously???

I've been interested in this theory for a while, with the defence and special teams coaches you could have and no wages on offence it could be possible on the game but it does sound ridiculous when you put it in real life context. But... any stats fans feel free to speculate on this question; Imagine you had the NFL dream defence from this season, how many turnovers per game would that team generate? How many times with an awesome punter would they stop a majority of teams getting into their own half?

I see no reason not to add it. If someone accidentally sets punt on all downs and you have this change all that will happen is let the game engine call plays for them on the other Downs.

You create kind of an autopilot. It is one thing to say "you shouldnt do this or that", and another thing to prohibit it the hard way.

I'm not ready to add such hard blocks for the moment...

The problem I see with not adding it is that it gives unscrupulous folk the opportunity to say 'oh sorry I made a mistake'.

Would it not be possible to at least add a 'Microsoft style' warning - 'are you sure you want to punt on this down?
