But why the change? other than "forcing a decision"

It promotes balance, a loaded deep team can't also have a YA full of top drawer talent without there being some risk. So teams either have to choose to forego top payers now and leave space for the future or risk losing players. The spreading of talent promotes balance. I guess it's like the NFL in that teams need to make compromises and choices rather than having their cake and eat it.

With 70 roster spots it's easily managed after the pain of the first season and making the initial adjustments.

Yeah, this makes sense. When I have played football games with real NFL roster limits, its always painful. You always have to cut one or two guys that you feel like you need. Part of the strategy.

I don't think at all, that this change provides any balance. Imo, the opposite is true

First, the inability to fire retirees hurts those the most that don't play in the playoffs
The rich get richer

Second, for teams without big bank account, having the possibility to cut retirees in the past limited the risk, if they miss the playoffs. As consequences for going into negative balance are so tough here, these teams now need to run their teams with lesser wages
the rich get richer

Third,
You can only so much plan for retirements as it is a such a random event. A player can retire at 30 or at 36 so provide basically 60% more lifetime
Teams do not run a teams with lots of old players because they like old players, they do because the skill system means, old players are the best players.
I always thought, one target of the game is to field a very talented team.
Its easy for a guy running a team of starters in the 30 to 35 skill range to say you do need that much roster spots. His draftees will start after 2 seasons. If your starters have higher skills, they need more training time to train your players up, so you could just need more slots.
And now you are hit by heavy retirement in one season. You got bad luck during the retirements roll and great you get rewarded that you cant even get your retirements on the roster.
Guess who can react, fire retirees and buy new good players on the TM.
Yes, those with big bank accounts.
the rich get richer

still I like the change that we should not have any incentive to cut veterans after their final game.

If I made the call, to offset the negative impact I would:

- let the late Youth Pulls not count against the roster limit

- change the salary system to reflect the NFLs
the current yearly salary should be completely paid in the regular season (weekly salary x 24 / 17 per reg. season week)
players playing in the playoffs should get extra salary per game. It should still be a financial gain to be in the playoffs, but not as much as now.

Would also trap less new players into bankruptcy as they would have less costs when there is less income for non playoff teams

Sounds reasonable to me, but I'm not sure how the youth pull would work... At what point do they start counting against the roster? If it is at season flip, then you have the same problem. If its one week into the season, then its really the same concept as the other idea I posted.

I assume you don't mean they wouldn't count for two seasons (the season they are pulled plus the next season)?

my 2 cents after reading through the posts. I am not sure when you have to make a decision by, hopefully I will be able to fire my player on the 18th when he comes out of the transfer market if no one bids on him.

I agree, just about every rule that is made helps the richer get rich and harder for the newer players to compete.

I would of kept my retiring star CB and tried to compete with in my league for a wild card spot as I already know that beyond that birth would be shooting for the moon. Regardless of how good my playing is, my players talent does not stack up high enough against those I am competing with who have 5 or 6 seasons under their belt with hordes of cash.

The idea of allowing players to keep those retiring and compete in their leagues for as long as possible makes the game more real. They are competing. Once you know you are done, you go into build for the future mode. This is when you would say goodbye to your retiring players and fire them. It is for the savings along with roster spots.

The argument over trying to make players play out the season with their best players is mute as I would pull those retiring and plug in younger players so that they would start building up their exp and improve them for future years. All that happens now is you have players idle on your bench with big salaries that have to be paid.

In the real NFL teams out of contention do make roster moves. They release players that are not part of their future at any time. We can in this game as well, as long as they are not retiring. Being stuck with those that are retiring is not realistic and yes hurts me a new player trying to compete.

If you wont go with getting rid of your retiring players at any time please consider making that decision of keeping or dumping your retiring players during week 12 of the league season, so people out of contention can start rebuilding for the future.

I too made a decision to keep most of my retirees, but tried to sell one. Long story short, he didn't sell now I am stuck with him. I think there should be two options for selling a retiree. 1. sell or rejoin team 2. sell or release

First year is growing pains. I think most people will understand they need to sell before Wednesday next season. Just have to make sure the new players realize that.
