Btw official definition of a blitz is when minimum 5 players rush the passer, so every 5 DL front in RZA is a blitz (as we cannot drop DLs back in coverage) and the most used blitz assignment in RZA 3 men front and 1 blitzing LB is not considered a blitz Where is the official definition from?? I think most people would consider a blitz any play where a player other than a DL was attacking the QB. I'm not sure even Mr. Price would consider 5-3-3 a blitz on every play. |

How would you define blitz then?
This is from wiki and I think it makes perfect sense: "The defense can bring all 11 players to blitz the quarterback. This would leave no one to follow and try to stop a target of a pass. So the defense chooses to bring a certain number of players to try to sack the quarterback, and leaves the rest to protect against a pass. Bringing 4 players or less is not considered a blitz. It is only considered a blitz when the defense rushes more than 4 players." So even if you're playing 4-3-4 and a LB rushes the QB if a DL drops back in coverage to compensate for the LB rushing the QB then it'd not be considered a blitz because "only" 4 men rushed the QB. That being said if you have a better definition I'm all ears. |

If you send in a LB on a 3-3-5, I would consider it a blitz even though its only 4 guys. |

Fair enough.
I still like Wikipedia's definition better for the following reason. - Using that definition if you say that a defense is blitzing you know it's got max 6 guys in coverage and min 5 rushing the passer meaning more pressure on the QB but lesser coverage. - Using your definition you could have 4 guys rushing the passer and call it a blitz while you could have 5 guys rushing the QB (in a 5-man front) and not call it a blitz. This seems weird to me. |

It makes sense to me. Its all about "surprising" the offense. The OL knows that the DL guys are rushing the QB. But for any other position it is an unknown. Even if a LB "shows a blitz" it is often just a bluff. If blitz a CB on a 3-3-5, no one knows its coming.
And yes, if a LB attacks and a DL drops back to cover out of a 4-3-4, I would still consider that a blitz. The attack is coming from an unknown vector. |

Wikipedia
Blitzkrieg: ... is a method of warfare ... breaks through the opponent's line of defence by short, fast, powerful attacks and then dislocates the defenders, using speed and surprise to encircle them Speed and surprise are an important part of the definition. And yes defense is misspelled, but I am quoting an "authoritative" source, |

Two things;
1) Defense/defence is a matter of UK or US English. Just like Color/Colour and similar words. There's actually a difference. 2) When you look over defensive plays, as Rock says, they're primarily called blitz plays if you have either a LB or CB doing pass rush. If the 3 or 4 DL are all rushing the passer, they're just doing their normal jobs in the standard defense. You add something (originally) out of the ordinary by for example calling a MLB blitz up the middle og add pressure with an OLB. In modern defenses, having blitzes in nearly all formations and packages is quite normal. If you watch a lot of games, you'll start noticing how the linemen change their style of play, depending on what they're asked to do. If the D tries to overload on the weak side, you'll typically see the opposite end alone and primarily try to make blockers look his way, while the end and OLB on the overloaded side goes all in on their, hopefully, one on ones. Same when you rush a MLB; you hope your DL guys either occupy the OL guys for your MLB to rush straight to the QB. In both scenarios, it's of course perfectly acceptable if anyone gets the sack. It's one of the things I really like about football. To me, it's chess for jocks. |

I think we all understand how football works, the problem we had was with the definition of blitzing after looking up a few football websites it appears there is no commonly accepted definition of blitzing. It's not mentioned once in the NFL official rules, it only talks about players "rushing the QB".
So we can all use whichever definition we want until the NFL or the Pro Football Hall of Fame or someone officially defines what a blitz is Edit: Or, to avoid confusion, we can do what the NFL does and talk about players "rushing the QB" Last edited on 2017-04-19 17:13:27 by Meitheisman |
