Watching games with my family on Christmas is a tradition in my household. If they stopped playing, I wouldn't have as much fun.

The thing is, they are pros, which means, after the game is right before the game.

Looks like the NHL is dealing different with this, but NFL and NBA are playing on 24th and 25th.
Playing 24th means you are eventually back at home on 25th, but it's not for sure.

And some play 26th, like college, you thing they do spend their 25th at home when playing next day on the other side of the continent?

Reality is, that sports is entertainment and the majority want that one, when they are at home and have a day off.

You could argue the same way regarding weekends.

There are a lot more people working on christmas day than some overpaid players.

PS: For me and my family was the 24th always more important than 25th, so I can't even see, why 24th and 26th are OK, but 25th not.

I am also used to players bringing kids around on Christmas day, parading their offspring around the pitch, happy like little kings. It's not like there is a rule preventing these players to bring their family around. Unlike people like workers on oil rigs or in nuclear plants, who do have to work on Christmas too.

I guess it's like Pete said, it's hard to take positions because they are good arguments on both side.

On the other hand a football game is only about 4 hours, it usually plays mid day, so you do still have the all evening to spend with your family, so I don't feel like it would be my main argument.

Nobody complained about sports game on easter day (not NFL of course, but european football leagues, rugby leagues all over the world, and so on), so the religious argument is bogus to me too.

I think what I feel for the most is the fact that most professional athletes can't really afford to enjoy the holidays because of their diet, no foie gras, no boozing, no fat food, or tons of Christmas cookies... God I would miss that

I wouldn't sign a petition nor expect one to protect emergency services from working Xmas day as we need them. I certainly wouldn't sign a petition to protect the rights of millionaire athletes who work Xmas day. As for their families, the life their money provides their families more than makes up for the fact the miss all or part of one day.

Why does this petition not also cover thanksgiving? Surely the same principle applies here?

Then explain it better. A lot of managers did state their opinion here are can't see the reason behind this while other sports and other holidays are not covered.

Family first is a nice starting point, but when does it become important? Christmas, Eastern, Thanksgiving (3 Football matches by the way), Sylvester, regular weekends?

Football-Pros are one of the last I would pity for their job. More I would pity the workers inside the stadium to get the people in and out, the supporting crews, the refs, the journalists, the cops and so on.
