When I read the news about Fox, I think Pace shot himself in the foot. Fox is a longstanding coach. I believe that he should have been kept in the loop. He's not a Super Bowl winner, but he's not incompetent either. Anyone, other than coaches leveling up from a coordinator position or from college, would have to be crazy or desperate to work for Pace. If it were me, I would always worry about the day he'll make a critical decision behind my back.

This was his 1st draft as a GM and the 1st thing he does is this?

its Pace 3rd draft, it just looks like a rookies

I dont know if its fox style to be in the loop when it comes to actual personnel decisions, especially on offense. he admitted to have never watched tape of Jimmy Clausen before his panthers drafted him. he seems very old school with his approach to the division of labour between GM and HC, since in most successfull front offices today GM and HC work closely together when evaluating players, scheme fit and so on

Has it been 3 seasons already?
Now, I kind of understand the decision. If I'm Pace, I realize that the end of my contract term is on the horizon. If draft a QB in year 3, I may be able to build a bridge to an extension, by arguing that my guy, Trubisky needs a full season to show what he can do, year 4, or what he can do with the new coach I hired, year 4 or 5. Either way, it's unscrupulous as hell, but I dig it.
If this is how things work out, Fox got played.

Beautiful backstabbing move
Eitherway it does not announce good things for either trubisky or John Fox...

I just heard on the Around the NFL podcast that Glennon got invited by the team to the draft only to see them pick another QB and that moments before they announced the pick Fox still thought they were gonna pick Solomon Thomas. What a mess

That's called an old school Illinois surprise buttsex
Seriously the whole scenario is messed up. I'd be John Fox I would have quit on the spot

Did the Bears give up a lot to move up and get Trubisky...yeah...but we also don't know if somebody else was trying to move up to #2 to get him as well. Certainly, teams tend to overpay to get 1st round QB's and yes, about half of them are busts. I don't think the Bears overpaid more so than the Rams or others teams did the previous years.

So the conventional wisdom today is that you draft a QB in the later rounds. But for every Russell Wilson, there are probably fiver others bench QBs/cuts. The success rate for late rounders is 10-20% compared with ~50% for 1st rounders.

Everyone seems to think that it's all on the QB's...but I think a lot is on the franchise. All these 1st round QB's aren't destine to be busts...but they are often going to dysfunctional teams (Bears might be an example of this). -G.O.A.T- succeeds, in part, because the Patriots are an exceptional franchise. Dax Prescott goes to a Cowboys team with a great 0-line and running game. Russell Wilson had a Super Bowl caliber team around time.

You could put any of those guys on Cleveland last year...how would they have done??

Will be interesting to see how Watson does at Houston. Do they have enough pieces around him and the coaching for him to succeed? I'd give him better odds than Trubisky...

I'd probably have done it like this:

Ravens Draft:
Round 1. Marlon Humphrey CB*****
Round 2. Tyus Bowser OLB***
Round 3. Chris Wormley DE**
Round 3. Tim Williams OLB*****
Round 4. Nico Siragusa OL***
Round 5. Jermaine Eluemunor OL*
Round 6. Chris Clark S *

5 stars = immediate contributor/starter. Tim Williams in 3rd was a steal and Humphrey is supposed to be one of the best athletes that's also got some football skills and intelligence.

3 stars = could have had a decent impact when we look back on the rookie season. Our passrush is lacking/old and the talentinfusion is needed. I believe that Bowser is more ready than Wormley, but hope they'll both contribute greatly. Siragusa is meant to be a good pick in 4th, I don't know much about him.

1 star = Just hope he won't be a bust.

I guess you can figure out where that leaves Wormley. I'd give him 2½ star if I could make half stars, but he's inbetween the last two imo. I hope he'll put my doubt to shame. Overall we did a fine draft and certainly didn't draft for need. Our offense is very much in the shambles imo and OL in 4th round is most likely not going to change that. I doubt we can ride our D deep into the playoffs. We don't have the Ed Reed and Ray Lewis kinds of leaders on this D. Is Mosley the heart? Is Smith the soul? Jefferson? Weddle?

Our D will be stout if we can avoid injuries to most starters, but we have no clear leaders, no motivators as I see it. The silent leader Ngata is no longer. The vocal like Reed and Lewis aren't either. Who will take control? Who will inspire those last 5-10% that puts our unit over the top?

Certainly not our O.

Eric Weddle has the voice on the D. Tony Jefferson should also. Our silent leader is Marshal Yanda and possibly Brandon Williams. We still have plenty of communicators and inspirers. Maybe they aren't Hall of Famers, but they're quality players.
