Fellow insect repellents, I have started the Cup after some consideration on how to group the teams - such is the wide range of repellent strength available.

Fear ye not if you are apparently one of the weaker brands.... up here in the Hebrides it's a well known fact that a particular ladies brand of liquid moisturiser 'skin so soft' is more effective at repelling the wee beasties than the 'Jungle' formulas sold by the hipster outdoor stores!

Group previews to follow as soon as I get out of the Peat bog.....

Group 1
Hebridean Academicals: ELO 730, Rating 67.3
The Accies are very proud of their noble 'Home grown talent only'. But pride is a deadly sin, and they should be very concerned about their ever continuing under achieving: mainly due to poor Game-planning. Their history is full of games they should have won, and giving up big plays on bad playbook choices. Not a Team that the better ranked should be worried about.

Morgantown Mad Dogs: ELO 777, Rating 64.6
The Mad Dogs do well with a limited skill set of Players - their weekly wage bill is so comparatively small. So signs of a good game-planner (you’ll see I have a bit of a thing about this!) perhaps learnt by necessity because they are in one of the toughest Admiral divisions. They do have a slight obsession about WR’s, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing! One of their best players is a Scot too, so liking that !!

КАФ Инђија Индианс: ELO 773, Rating 67.5
КАФ have been around for a while now, solidly steady progress, and managing to avoid being relegated from Sea Devils 1.1 last Season, - which was better than the Academicals did. They have 3 or Blue chip plays spread around their roster, are good at defending the Pass, and stand a good chance of progressing from their group.

Real Templars of steel: ELO 561, Rating: 59.7
The Templars win the bravery award for entering a Cup where they would clearly have a tough campaign ahead of them. I like the fact that whilst they build their new Team they have concentrated of the Defence much more than the Offence - a sure sign of a smart Manager, although they look a little light at LB. But they’ve invested in a solid, experienced QB and WR combo, so there’s always going to be an opportunity, can they convert when they need to?

Group 2
Derbyshire Electric: ELO 954, Rating 69.0
Gabriel seems to have the tough task in this group, but the Electric do have a very solid Defense to build on. And Gabriel does well, winning a tough Division in the Admirals last season - NOT an easy feat. Their Rating would be much higher if it wasn’t for their Special Teams - I imagine the Electric are hoping none of their matches goes down to a last minute FG attempt…….

Kumberg Cowboys: ELO 1097, Rating 70.6
The fact that the Cowboys are currently in the Elite division speaks for itself. BUT, it’s the highest ELO in the competition with a relatively low Rating which indicates that there is a master game-planner behind the Cowboys. I look at the Roster and (please forgive me Thommy) but there is nothing too frightening jumping out. But because of this - and the ELO / Elite status, the Cowboys have got something special……. I just wish I knew what it is!!
Serious contenders here, make no mistake.

Wittgenstein Rebels: ELO 997, Rating 76.7
I’m confused here - Ludwig Wittgenstein was a philosopher, not much of a Rebellious profession. Well actually, maybe it is - thinking outside the box, putting forward views differing from the normal. And he was a philosopher of mathematics - which is particularly apt as the Rebels are the sum of all their parts (got there in the end!). Looking at the rebels Roster they seem slightly limited on Offence with only a couple of star OL’s and one standout WR, but they clearly get the job done with a high ELO reaching both Dragons and Supercup Playoffs last season. They have a great DL, and it won’t be easy trying to get through on the ground, and I bet there won’t be many points big point differences in any of their matches.

Chester Ducks: ELO 1060, Rating: 82.3
Highest rated team in the Cup, winner of 4 Friendly Cups and the Champ of Champs in Season 18, So….. pretty good pedigree then! At first glance you notice that their Rushing rating is higher than their Passing Rating. So: intriguing? Actually, it’s more like frightening when you look at the heavyweight Offensive Line who look like they could open a tunnel rather than a hole and fend off an attack from Attila the Hun. Oh, and they have a stella QB too. Defensively, they have a GREAT DL and very big guns at LB and CB too. The chink in the armour?.......... No Gunners. So if you want success, focus on the Kick Returns - if you can hold ‘em to a FG, score a TD on the Kickoff return - you’ll be ahead…….. simples, eh?!

КАФ Инђија Индианс ELO 771, Rating 67.1 @ Real Templars of Steel ELO 569, Rating: 59.6
Well here at HQ, we’re liking the Templars on this one. Ratings may favour КАФ, but we reckon this could be the shock of Round 1…… that is if the Templars passing game gets going. Will КАФ try and make the best of their apparent advantage in the trenches to get through to the Templars light looking LB’s? Will Gareth Bale get a hair transplant?........ who knows, but we are going to stick our (neatly shaved) neck out for the Templars

Hebridean Academicals ELO 743, Rating 67.5 @ Morgantown Mad Dogs ELO 778, Rating 64.1
ELO says that the Mad Dogs should squeak this one, but Ratings and squad all point to the Accies. Still like all Brits the Accies are adept (their best skill by far) at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, after all they have a gameplanner of such ability that they would seriously worry a pre-school Ludo gamer. The multi-cultural Mad Dogs (if you ever think of changing the Teams name) should theorectically struggle here, but I’m very aware about that very well earned ELO rating compared to Team skills….

Derbyshire Electric ELO 962, Rating 69.0 @ Kumberg Cowboys ELO 1101, Rating 61.7
The Cowboys ELO has tweaked upward over the last few days but their rating has tumbled, and suddenly it looks like they are going to struggle against the Electric. ELO is a good indicator though, as is their Elite Status (and 1-1 start) …… so maybe not. The Electric are off to a 2-0 start in their tough Admirals Division and have that very stingy looking defense. So with a CSI hat on, the evidence points to the Electric, and that’s the way we’re going to flow (current - geddit?).
Electric by 7

Wittgenstein Rebels ELO 985, Rating 76.4 @ Chester Ducks ELO 1058, Rating: 82.1
The Rebels won the last time these Teams played (in Season 23) and have a beautifully balanced squad. The Ducks have the scariest looking squad in the Cup, but had a surprise league defeat at the beginning of the week. Hmmm, this a tricky one to call methinks. Eeeny, meeny, miny, Duck - sounds slightly better than Eeeny, meeny, miny Rebel, so we’ll go with the Ducks on this one

КАФ Инђија Индианс 76 _ 3 Real Templars of Steel
Whoa - КАФ turn up the heat on Defence as much as they scorch the air on Offence with a big scoring win. Templars need to get their thinking helmet on!

Hebridean Academicals 28 _ 3 Morgantown Mad Dogs
Is it Prom night? Very flattering score line for the Academicals (geddit?!) as they can only score 10 points on Offence. Mad Dogs make fewer mistakes but still need to head for the classroom not the ballroom.

Derbyshire Electric 13 _ 23 Kumberg Cowboys
Electric get cut off in the fourth in shocker of a collapse. What ARE the weapons in the Cowboys holster?

Wittgenstein Rebels 14 _ 41 Chester Ducks
Oh my, Ducks looking like a big bird in a small pond. Rebels or rabble? …… need not so much philosophy as Rodins’ thinker instead

Cowboys look the literal opposite of our bunch of over-paid, over-rated and generally under-performing (apart from in friendly cups for some reason) prima donas.

Could be an interesting game next week ...
