As some of you know, I analyze a lot of game data.
To support the SG4 Discussion, I will share some Formation Data from Season 25 (total > 179000 plays.) Please be warned, Even though the total number of plays seems to be very high, if you break down the data by logical variable, this leads to too small amount of data to lean on. It is also not possible to extract talent from the equation. So if a lot of good teams think, that one formation is very good and use it a lot, it will show up in the data as if the formation is better. However the reason might be that just the average talent using that formation is better. So always take it with a grain of salt: Source: http://fs5.directupload.net/images/170720/bveeb2jh.jpg Source: http://fs5.directupload.net/images/170720/riv98j4p.jpg Source: http://fs5.directupload.net/images/170720/7par7vpc.jpg Source: http://fs5.directupload.net/images/170720/4xkbl2gq.jpg |

Wow Easy to see why some teams just run SG4 all game. Most yardage on the run AND the pass, low Int rate, and low stuff rate! Really no reason to ever use any other formation...

The poor production from single spread stands out to me as the furthest formation from reality. The run effectiveness of SG4 also seems high. SG4 should be best passing offense but in real life FBs do not rush as well as HBs and no TE to help block rushing other formations should outperform SG4 in rushing per attempt all things equal.
The SG4 rushing isn't conclusive without knowing if blitz rate is similar and defensive formation against is similar. Single spread though should be very close to SG4 in passing and slightly better running as it has a HB rather than a FB running the ball. Single spread appears to be the formation that needs fixing abaove all others based on the data vs reality. |

Also, taking the snap from under centre should help the running game with Spread v SG, in theory. |

Overall rushing Average of SG4 is inflated because a lot of people use dime against SG4 and Dime is awful against outside runs
Single Spread vs 3-4-4 also puzzles me especially as I know that some manager always blitz against, so that should even help the rushing average. I thought statistical fluke but S26 data shows similar results. |

One advantage that few people seem to mention, is running SG4WR is cheaper (salary-wise). Consider, you don't have to train and pay a RB or a TE. You can throw all your salary at WRs and FBs!
