Okay...we're a few games into the college season - - which QB or other player (Saquon Barkley?) is the top player?
1. Sam Darnold, USC 2. Josh Rosen, UCLA 3. Saquon Barkley, Penn St. 4. Lamar Jackson, Louisville 5. Josh Allen, Wyoming 6. Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma St. Steve SD Blitz |

Saquon Barkley is the top player in college football right now, but the top selection in the draft will likely be one of the mentioned QBs. Unfortunately, almost all of them have shown themselves to be mistake prone. I believe that keeps the default selection, Sam Darnold, at the top of the list for the moment. So far, the deep QB class doesn't look all that impressive in the early going of the season.

Agreed on Barkley, looks a class apart right now.
Darnold is probably still the top QB prospect, even giving the underwhelming start. Someone told Peter King (IIRC) in 2016 that Josh Allen would be the top pick in the 2018 draft, but he's had the same issues as the rest. We all know what Lamar Jackson is, outstanding player but a top QB? Josh Rosen looks like he's trying to do it all himself. Mason Rudolph looked like the early season leader until this past weekend. Still a ways to go! |

I think Sam Darnold will probably get more headlines because he's on a better team, but I think Josh Rosen might have a better arm & accuracy. Darnold is certainly more mobile. Both - - like all young QB's - - throw into coverage too much, but which will progress to a better decision maker. Steve SD Blitz |

I do like them both, but I'm always rooting for the arrogant young rebel, so rosen for me he could be really interesting for the NFL, not just on the field rosen definitly has more personality than trubisky for example, which leads me to a stupid bears question: if trubs repeated last years performance in college and entered this years draft, where would you rank him? |

The thing is...with college stats, that just necessary to gain entry, but it doesn't really determine where you get picked. If you're a potential first rounder, then the teams all evaluate you individually (without much concern for college performance). Seems like combine/pro day performance, hand size, Wonderlic test results are more important than winning college football games. Steve SD Blitz |

Steve SD Blitz ok, I see, but I bet youre just being nice because I was totally prepared for a "wouldnt make my list" grade thats just a really deep QB class this year |

Steve SD Blitz I think this kind of evaluation is to their own detriment. Winning IMO is most important for a QB because of the NFL pay structure. The player that can learn to win independent of the talent surrounding him typically has the best chance for success. |

The player that can learn to win independent of the talent surrounding him typically has the best chance for success. To finish in the top 2 Heisman voting, you generally have to be on a fairly dominant team, so this list should all be high win rate QBs. The ones bolded are the only ones to actually ever put up a winning record in the NFL. 1990: Ty Detmer 1991: Casey Weldon* 1992: Gino Torretta 1993: Heath Shuler* 1995: Tommie Frazier* 1996: Danny Wuerffel 1997: Peyton Manning* 1998: Michael Bishop* 1999: Joe Hamilton* 2000: Chris Weinke 2001: Eric Crouch 2002: Carson Palmer 2003: Jason White 2004: Matt Leinart 2005: Vince Young 2006: Troy Smith 2007: Tim Tebow 2008: Sam Bradford 2010: Cam Newton 2011: Robert Griffin III 2012: Johnny Manziel 2013: Jameis Winston 2014: Marcus Mariota 2016: Deshaun Watson* * - denotes first runner up, used only if a RB/WR won the Heisman. The number of absolute busts on that list until very recently, I think is why most scouts care very little about college winning, more often than not - it doesn't translate to the NFL at all.
