I think pete is either suffering from a few too many pints of the good stuff or is deliberately being obtuse to lead people away from the laughable performance of the supposed world champions!

either way, Eng-er-land will be dining on Swedes on Saturday before we prepare for either Croatia or Russia.....

deep, deep forum dive back to EURO '16

Truth is, people get confused, thinking the standard of the Premier League equates to the standard of our National team. Nothing could be further from the truth. Being part of successful domestic teams is down to the foreign coaches and teammates they play under and with. Why is it that very, very few English players are ever sought by the top clubs in the world? Take the class away from them, put them together, and they get shown up for what they are. Really very ordinary.....and before anyone tries to say any the different, remember they were beaten by a team tonight who had players from Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic - a mid table Championship team and a Division 1 team.

Absolutely awful....and its not like it was just tonight. Draws against a god awful Russian and Slovakian teams and a relatively lucky win against Wales.

I get the feeling some english fans are much harder on their team because of those unrealistic expectations you described yourself - and its mostly those expectations, that dont get backed up at tournaments, why other fans make fun of england, but besides that the 3 lions are pretty well liked (at least in austria)... sure there are longstanding rivalries like with Germany, where "Bild Zeitung" pulls the same BS as "The Sun"...

but other than that you are putting yourself too much in the "victim spot" from my point of view, that seems to give you permission to show lots of "schadenfreude" about other teams misfortunes. for example in that EURO 2016 thread, no one piled on England as a "so called birth place of football" or something after they lost to Iceland, so I dont think you are putting your fight to the right forum now... sure we make fun of each other, but its usually not in a mean spirited way

Honestly the way I look at it is that the prem is the best league in the world so why would English youngsters want to leave? Obviously the smart ones who want game time rather than money - such as Dier and Jadon Sancho - left to develop, but the vast majority are left in squads as a result of basically their own stupidity and they basically stunt their own growth - looking at you Delph/Rodwell/basically every Englishman who went to City 2009-2015

I wonder if the rigid 4-4-2 that FA used for decades in all age classes is in part responsible for a lack in talent development: besides a classical "10" playmaker, that system doesnt require lots of creativity (its basically just a defensive formation, when not in possession, nowdays), but defensive qualities in the midfield and physical wings and Fullbacks.

if thats the cookie cutter for the "english player", it just doesnt fit modern football, the way it developed in the past 10 years, very well, and even before that it wasnt exactly cutting edge (ManU could very successfully play that with Beckham, Giggs, Ronaldo at the wings of course, but the national side never had as much talent there, see the problem to find left wingers in the beckham era)

thats why I really like Southgate, he dares to challenge that dogma and I hope he becomes the "english Löw" with his team...

what is the point of going back years in a vain attempt to discredit something said about today...…? Pretty lame.

Nowhere have I said that England are the worlds best, or a superior football team to all. All I have said is that we are in the Q/Fs (by hook or crook I think my term was) and had a laugh (as others do with alarming regularity when it is England) at those teams who have failed spectacularly.

Nothing but fact there...and my opinion of the EPL remains consistent as it was then.

not every response is meant as a slight and I did not want to discredit anything by quoting that old post, and I agree that it still does hold a lot of truth

you seemed to suggest that basically all the other football fans wish england the worst and you are just responding to that because you think now its your turn.

I put up your quote here to support my theory that english fans themselves are the most critical about their team, make the most jokes about it. if the rest of us acted like you do, we would have kicked down on the english national squad after it was already lying on the ground with that iceland loss. would be pretty lame, right?

nope, would be totally deserved!

as said, we take a lot of scorn and teasing - and rightly so for the most part - its just that other nations don't seem to like it as much when its given back their way.....

England fans do get carried away - we are the most vocal and amongst the most passionate - not always with good reason from a footballing perspective - and I do feel the representation of our National squad is nothing to do with the standard of our domestic league or teams.

But hey...this thread is about THIS YEARS World Cup - and England are one of the 8 teams left standing. Those who have fallen we can gloat about for now....until we fall or, god forbid for you ALL, we win it!!!

Then you will see the true meaning of gloating!

Just for when someone wants to look back in several years time () - here is one of the best football clips you will EVER see...

this is South Korea going 2-0 up, with German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer somehow thinking he could do better than his outfield teammates.....

Pete, this is for you and the whole of Germany. Thank you all for this moment.
