Southgate has done an exceptional job of bringing the team, media and nation together so that he was pretty much a winner no matter what happened. Playing the likes of Pickford, Trippier and Maguire was something of a risk - but, on the back of looking to the future and giving them this invaluable experience - and all three have been exceptional - English fans have bought into it and have been rewarded with a trip to the last four and who knows what else. I have simply LOVED this World Cup in its entirety - and as much as i welcome the success of England even if it comes to a halt on Wednesday, i think this tournament has been the best for ages - histrionics of players apart, we have seen some amazing football, brilliant matches, jaw dropping goals and saves, drama in pretty much every game, and some moments that will go down in WC history. Russia have done a superb job in hosting this tournament and they deserve every credit. Croatia will be a huge test for England....i darent look past that but feel the true two form teams are in the other Semi Final and must be favourites...but who cares now...England are back. Well said. I agree that this World Cup has been interesting and amazing in so many ways. As always a number of tier A players are unable to perform as expected. Only Ronaldo and perhaps Kane (if Kane can be considered tier A). Neymar succeeded mostly in his acting drama and Messi.....well. At tier b: Eriksen, Alli, G. Jesus, Hazard, Hernandez has had reasonable games. As Lewandowski, Falcao, Suarez, Rodriguez, Werner, Müller just fell through on scoring goals. Lukaku and Cavani proving consistent with the overall season. VAR has been interesting - loved and hated, but in most senses making the game more fair. As for credit to Russia for hosting the event - yeah, the stadiums look awesome and sounds like everything has been running smoothly - so well done with that. What must be pointed out is the difficulty obtaining tickets and for foreigners/supporters to visit the games. It was another suprise to see the semi-final and not even all seats taken. Not to mention howrelatively quiet it all was. Something is very wrong there. |

Then show me where you hyped up France's chances anytime before they made the WC Final. |

No match up is known until a few days before it is finalised (obv group stages excepted). So fans cant/don't want to commit to flights and tickets in case they don't get there - and when they do, have a very small window and have to have very deep pockets to be able to organise all the necessary travel, accommodation and get the game tickets also, which are very security minded. But for saying there was so many fears pre tournament about racism, violence and security of fans, i think it has (so far!) been nothing but a celebration of football, run so smoothly and has had the drama to compliment the hosting to make it so memorable. |

I'd consider Griezmann and de Bruyne tier A too (EDIT: have to throw in Modric too, but with the croatian game plans their great midfield ist not even used to their full potential somehow) and while they did not exactly explode, they put in really good performances and Mbappe looks like the next big thing my revelation of the tournament was Trippier though, really nice player who should have another EURO and World cup in him Last edited on 2018-07-11 23:19:30 by Buddy Ryan |
