It's a movement to stop a bill inside the EU, which many do believe would lead into censorship on the internet.
The EU likes to reform the copyright rules and would like to force the major companies to honor those more strictly. The fear is that the companies will bring on upload-filters to avoid manual effort and payments and instead just block potential copyright infractions. But only a few people will have control over those upload filters and that gives a few people a lot of power over content uploaded to the internet. That's it in a small nutshell. |

Good summary. The biggest issue is that all the politicians are talking about the effects it would have to Google or Facebook. But this is not the story, since those compoanies have their filters in place already. It affects the small companies, it affects...me!

So you're concerned you're going to have to "filter" the comments in the forum or something? For copyright or for for other content?
In the states, there is a lot of push back on Facebook/Twitter/Youtube/Google on political censorship and banning people with right of center opinions. There are several high profile lawsuits now. If you ever watch/listen to the Joe Rogan podcasts, he had Jack Dorsey (founder of Twitter) on with his head of legal to discuss it about 2-3 weeks ago. Steve SD Blitz |

It is a little bit different. Creators are fighting for kind of a fair play, which is in their opinion hard to fight for against those big companies. But the law that should help with that was crafted in kind of a poor way with so much room for different ways of understanding it. It could be very well this is abused to earn some good money on the back of smaller companies. There are exceptions for startups, but AFAIK not real protections for small companies, which cannot afford making deals with the content industry to enter license agreements.
I am OK with the goal, but there could have been a morer clearer protection of smaller businesses... I would have loved a dedicated fair use policiy... |

Steve SD Blitz What I find "funny" about this whole censorship debate is that those right of center complain about Alex Jones or people like this being censored like if this was the end of free speech but on the other hand Republicans in Congress wanted to pass a law to ban BDS and these same people usually agree with this so it's not really about free speech at all but rather about political opinions. That guy on the Joe Rogan podcast who was basically arguing that harassment should be allowed on Twitter because it's a form of free speech protected by the US constitution was pretty annoying imo. |

It's really a difficult issue for Twitter. The journalist, Tim Pool, was mostly pointing out how inconsistent there anti-harassment policy was and how it had built in bias. If you label certain political positions as harassment (one example he pointed out was related to transgenderism), then you automatically end up being unfair when you enforce it. The other big issue is that twitter is now a virtual public square (or so goes the argument). So twitter is enforcing different rules, more limiting that the public speech laws guaranteed by the Constitution. But Twitter is also a platform trying to be successful and profitable, so they don't want to just devolve into a harassment platform and have everybody leave. Not sure what the answer is. I find the "any kind of ban for harassment will show bias so no ban should happen" argument a bit silly. It's like saying noone should ever be prosecuted because the justice might show bias.
Not differentiating between kind of private speech, or something said to a small group of people to something billions can read is a bit silly too. Sure, I can tell you and everyone reading RZA that I think my neighbor is a thief for example but I can't buy a full page ad in USA Today calling my neighbor a thief. Twitter (and other platforms) should be regulated differently than free speech in the streets because it has a different impact. The legislature is always behind technology but I'm fairly certain this is how it will end up. |
