What do you guys think about the new open field blocking rule?
I think the NFL is trying to get more money out of the TV contracts and give them more time for advertises.  |

I do not get how you are supposed to block then. Waving a flag before and scream to the victim for attention? And yes, I understand very well the goal of this change and of course I like it much if our sport is causing les injuries and becomes a little bit safer.

But this should have been addressed with the defenseless player rule and the unnecessary roughness rule, instead of bringing in a new rule which just causes more confusion.

That's what the NFL Rules Committee is best at. Instead of fixing rules to be more clear and concise, they invent new ones to further confuse the game and tighten the noose around the necks of the refs, who already carry a majority of responsibility for bad calls.

I like this rule. It will benefit to truely skilled defenders. Almost all pro players can block a guy on his blind side. But how many will be able to anticipate more the routes for a pass deflection or to lock better the player?

I'm not sure you read the rule right.
A WR on a deep route is not allowed to block a defender, which is coming in his direction, with his forearm or his shoulder (that he's not allowed with his helmet is OK). If he is behind him it's "block in the back", if he is in front of him it's "blindside block"???? 
If the refs use the "defenseless player" rule correct this new rule would be totally uneccessary. Last edited on 2019-03-31 11:42:43 by Schwabe |

As I understood, blocks are still possible from the front. Only from the back or parallel becomes illegal.

NFL owners voted to eliminate blindside blocks, which the league defines as a foul "if a player initiates a block when he is moving toward or parallel to his own end line and makes contact to his opponent with his helmet, forearm or shoulder."
The league points out that one-third of all concussions suffered by players on punts were caused by blindside blocks. I think the key thing is the "moving toward or parallel to his own end line". It is designed to stop the wipeout blocks on chasing defenders, in terms of gameplay just getting in the way of a defender is enough to generally stop his pursuit so i dont see it having much effect on the game. I can see why the NFL has done it, they lose some spectacular looking hits from the game but they eliminate a play which has a high risk of causing an injury. The blocking player just by getting in the way of a defender can probably do enough to stop the tackle without resorting to wiping out a defender therefore it should not prevent many big plays. From the NFL's point of view its a sensible decision for an organisation which has had to pay out huge amounts of money in lieu of concussions ove the years and is still under a lot of scrutiny because of it. |
