Hi there !
Link to the game. I was tanking my relagation game (Yeah, I know, it's bad but I got my reasons and it will be the only time I tank in this game) and I noticed a very weird play in Q3 : 12:35 Thibault Chauveau (K) kicks the ball for the field goal, 110 yard field goal missed 12:35 touchdown 12:35 Ball spotted on the 15, Enver Prodanovic (K) kicks the ball for the PAT, PAT is good I am not awared about american football rules but may be it's just because the kick was attempt on the goal line and as it was obviously missed it was an automatic TD because the ball was already on the goal-line. Nothing important as you are not supposed to tank and this situation is obviously impossible in a normal game but may be it can be useful at some point. |

I was quick checking some known rules. The NFL says on missed field goals the game proceeds from the kicking spot, but touchback rules apply. I found nothing about the other side of the field. Therefore, I cannot judge this to be wrong or right. I guess we will never know how the NFL would handle this, since there never would be a Fieldgoal attempt from the own goalline.
Sorry to say, but I see no need and no ruleset for such an change. |

Well, the situation feels like it should be a safety to me, but:
Rule 11 Scoring - Article 4 Field Goals - Section 4 Missed Field Goal wrote:

Exceptions: It is not a safety: [...] (2) If a defensive player, in the field of play, intercepts a pass or catches or recovers a fumble, backward pass, scrimmage kick, free kick, or fair catch kick, and his original momentum carries him into his end zone where the ball is declared dead in his team’s possession.[...] That sounds like a TD is the correct outcome of this play. But the defense didn't advance the ball. If something like this was actually tried, I think it would be handled like pass interference in the end zone and the ball would be spotted on the 1

Safety: no, because opposites offense is technically in possession outside their own endzone 1st down: it is, but spot at goalline, resulting in a touchdown. I do not see how we could waste more time than discussing a situation that should never ever happen if the game was used as intented. |
