I brought this topic up several seasons ago, with my previous team (which was also named Green Bay Hackers), that we should have team and player options on contracts. It would be nice to have, to add some more options to negotiations. Could we bring that discussion back to the table?

Happy to hear some people's opinions.

I guess most of us do not know what your suggestion is about in detail. Could you provide some facts, please?

I don't think this is what the OP had in mind, but it would be nice to have a few day window to cut draftees without having to pay remaining salary

Please do not mix suggestions, it makes my job in following the arguments much harder. Open a new suggestions instead, please.

Options on contracts offer a manager the choice on whether or not they want to keep a player for that given year of their contract. Usually it is for just the last year of a contract, although I have seen it in place for the last two years of a player's contract.

A team option means the team gets to decide if they want to keep a player for that year of their contract. It functions something like this: when you offer a player a contract, say a contract for three seasons, with a team option on the last year (this is usually is seen as 2 years + 1 year with a team option). After the first two years of the contract are done, you decide on whether or not you want to activate the last year of his contract. If you activate it, he stays with your team for that year. If you decline it, he becomes a free agent at season's end.

A player option is exactly the same as a team option, except that the player decides on the option.

The team option is more beneficial during contract extensions; I feel like the player option could be implemented most while bidding on a player in the TM, to try to entice a player to join your team. That might mean a change in the TM from bidding on a player to offering a player a contract. I know that would be a big change, and would probably be a huge process, but I think it would be a beneficial change.

Let's talk about it and see if we can work something out.

I liked the team option suggestion. I am not sure if it will really help but sounds good.

On the other hand, the player option seems a bit difficult to implement because the player will need some kind of "AI" to decide whether to stay or leave. And I did not like this uncertainty when planning my roster...

I think the player option would be good to implement on the TM. This would help curtail 'day trading' to some extent as it would make it more costly if managers had to pay the remainder of the contract.

Perhaps to negate the AI somewhat the acceptance criteria could be 100% if a player has played in 100% of games during the contract period. Then dividing 100 (%) by the number of games in the contract period would give the likely percentage that the player will accept i.e. the more you play him the more cahnce he will stick around.

This also makes managers think more carefully about signing players and only picking up what they really need.

I could see this options with some salary tweaks.

Team Option: The player want to have a little bit more money per week in the negotiation plus a small signing bonus at the moment the option gets drawn.

Player Option: The player want to have a little less money per week in the negotiations but if you cancel the contract you have to pay for the full period.

I think with Captain Jack's suggestion for the chance on the player option this would be not too difficult to implement.
