I like the fact that at least Merkel is acting kind of smooth at the moment. So Germany is for now not on the list of "that other countries". We have so called Covidiots as well, a minority. Right wing parties occupying this movement, turns it into something most people basically dislike. The biggest problem in German IMO is the so called federalism, which means each of these 16 parts of Germany can act as it thinks is right. This causes some series issues, and discussion. Would love to have a more centralized approach, maybe by introducing a DefCon like ruleset with rules set in stone for each level. Each part of Germany can then decide on his own (with help from the central government) which DefCon applies for its part of Germany, and everyone would know what was allowed and what is not. Federalism is one of the strengths and weaknesses in the US too....but we have 50 state governors making divergent decisions. A lot of people like to throw it all on the President (which is partially justified), but actually most of the policy decisions are being made on a state-by-state basis. Also, many school re-opening/closing decisions are made at the county & school district level. My son is in one school district and has in-person school and my daughter is in another school district and has remote school. Steve SD Blitz |

We're going back into a form of Lockdown this week, but with schools and universities remaining open, I'm not altogether optimistic as to how effective it will be.... the data for the current wave appears to indicate that the reopening of Universities contributed heavily to the resurgence of the virus. The case rate initially exploded in 18-24 year olds, before spreading to the other demographics.
The Northwest of England has had it bad - and their high rate of infection was traced to a single group of young lads who went to Spain partying in August, came back and went on a pub crawl... |

Just be careful with fingerpointing. In Germany, there was an American lady blamed across all media, not yellow press only, for partying and being a superspreader. 2 weeks later it was clear this was all rubbish. The young lady had their reputation, and it stays like that. IMO, there is no single events causing superbad counts. However, good luck for you all.

The ICU beds occupancy is at 96.6% in France, the economy is shut down again, we are under another lockdown and yet, only 54% of French people would get vaccinated if the vaccin was available right now And may are still against wearing a mask. I am tired of people... 😣

So they've been rolling out the vaccines (from Pfizer & Modera) in the US since December - - mostly health care workers. It's pretty hard to get - my wife is in mental health and can't get it an appointment/slot.
It has really affected the number of cases - - we are still experiencing a pretty bad wave in the US. Los Angeles is now the epicenter despite some of the most restrictive measures - - I suspect it has more to do with population density and existing social problems. Steve SD Blitz |
