It seems like in the US, the infection rate is increasing as the various states open up and the number of daily deaths has increased slightly as well. Some cities/states are closing back down a bit.

I also heard that Spain and France are having some resurgence after they begin to open a little more.

The number of cases is indeed increasing a little bit here. It is getting concerning in a couple of regions. The government decided to oblige people wearing masks in public indoor places. I personally wish it happened before, as you could have guessed.

Wearing a mask is not fun, especially in summer. But it’s a small inconfort for the greater good. It will most likely save lives, that’s what matters. Also, like vaccines, it works only if the whole population follows. Hopefully people will understand it.

So it sounds like in San Diego, kids will begin the school year in August doing remote school. I guess there are four criteria setup by the state and we failed one (# of active cases per 100k people) of them to start on-site school next year. In San Diego, most of the cases are actually in the zip codes near the border - - so most of San Diego is pretty clean, but the average is inflated by the locales adjacent to Mexico.

I know Mexico is struggling to control the spread. There resources and medical infrastructure are more limited and they've been less able to have the whole country work remotely just because of the nature of their economy.

It looks like the Big Ten & Pac-12 (2 of the 5 power five college football conferences) are canceling fall sports - - so college football for 2020 is either in jeopardy or will be pushed back to the spring.

Not sure about the NFL - - I think with pro football there is a little more incentive to play.

Through my work, I have indirect contacts with the NFL Europe. 3 weeks ago, the season was happening no matter what. But it was before the first opt out and at the time there was almost nobody on the covid reserve list.

Now it seems that not many players opted out and many players left the reserve covid list. If the situation does not get worse, I don’t see the NFL changing their plan.

But what matters is not really if the season is played or not. It is that the situation does not get worse. Last week showed some improvements but yesterday figures are back up.

I've been surprised that baseball has been successful at maintaining their schedule. That said, Tampa Bay and St. Louis have had some major covid issues.

NBA and the bubble seem to be working...but the NFL is too large a roster and the full season schedule is too long to do a bubble. Not sure what will happen with college football - - Pac-12 and Big Ten have "canceled" season while SEC, ACC and Big-12 are moving forward.

185 thousand deaths in the USA from Covid19 until today.

I honestly do not understand those who deny that the pandemic exists, nor to those who assure that the Earth is flat.

I suspect they are the same people.

At least in the states, I don't think too many people deny their is a pandemic. I think there is a big debate about how to best approach it (especially with respect to the economic, educational and personal freedom aspects).

Early on you had some people saying this was just going to be like a bad flu year: 24K-62K flu deaths (estimate)

Also, there were other experts projecting that 2M deaths (in the US) would result from the pandemic.

Obviously both of these points of view have proved to be wrong.

Few days ago, there was an interview with academic people. They said the US could have reached death ratios like 40k people less if there was a different direction given by politicians, during the first 8 weeks of the pandemic. So, maybe it is wrong to blame politicians for their actions in the past, since we cannot know for sure what they knew at a certain point, or much more what we know today but did not know at that point. However, I just hope we all learn from the mistakes made.
