I am in Australia and when I go to pay to become a supporter it comes up in Euros and wants me to pay VAT as well???

Yes, correct.

I am based in Germany, EU. Customers from outside EU (like Australia) have to pay the German tax for VAT, which is 16% at the moment. I have to forward those 16% to the tax authority. For countries from inside the EU their local tax applies, which I forward to the tax authority of those countries. AU is not part of this agreement. You could helkp with that by running a business, and getting a tax id which is valid in the EU. Since you usually purchase such in game licenses for private use, this path is not valid for you.
