Yep, it is the number one soccer club of my former hometown. And man, do they split the community. One time they have great ideas, like the one of selling tickets for ghost games. And they have a big supporting community behind them. Then, suddenly, they do stupid things, or their games become events for hardline right wingers to show up, or to add a "third halftime" for clashs with opposing fanbases or the police. A good portion of their games are called "risk games", because of so many security challenges.
Not easy... When I was a kid, in the 80s I did not miss any game at home ... but times were different. |

I've never quite understood European soccer clubs and how they have Ultras or are aligned with politic factions. For the most part, teams in America are mostly apolitical - - although that has changed a bit lately.

Most of the soccer teams in Europe, or at least in France, are apolitical too. But it is true that some supporter groups are labeled mostly on the far right, sometimes in the far left. However we need to separate the team itself to its groups of supporters, same as we need to separate those organized groups to the rest of the fans. Few idiots do not make a fan base or a team identity.
I also think sport is perceived a bit different in Europe than in the US. You guys made professional sport a real show (and you did it very well) while in Europe soccer and many other sports seem to be always more folk with stronger roots and attachement to a specific team. So many low income fans would spend all their savings following there team everywhere. And sometimes they get influenced by bad politics opinions. The group effect does not help, as often. People can be lovely individually, but gather them in one place and add one or a few leaders with a despicable agenda and you get a terrible or even dangerous group of people. It applies in sport, but not only, and it’s probably true everywhere. |
