Then, th e next time those French speaking Houston/Tennessee/Pittsburgh/Russian natives start making fun of them you can point to the scoreboard. |

Week 14 power rankings are released!
Monarchs 1 Power Rankings - Week 14 Top 10 notes: -Bradford Bulls secure the #1 ranking after their win against the Aliens. -Leopards jump from #4 to #2 after their blowout win. -Dragons drop to #3 since the leopards leaped up. -Aliens drop to #4 after their aforementioned loss. -Ranks #5-9 are unchanged -DA Raiders get upset by the Hawks and drop out of the top 10, they are replaced with the Oilers once again. Hey Everyone!
I'm glad you all seem to be liking my power rankings so far. I have an exciting u p d a t e for next season that I wanted to discuss! I want to add pass/rush yards allowed and let that determine the defensive rating for a team. That reflects defense strength better than Def. TDs, sacks, interceptions and TFL in my opinion and would create a more accurate power ranking if it was included. I checked with Pete and there is no way to put yards allowed in the statistical leaders page currently. However, I was able to extract it by copying the current week's games in the league table, determine everyone's opponent's and figure out how many total offense yards their opponent's had for the game by comparing their offense totals from the previous week. Obviously, I can't add in yards allowed this season as the yards from each individual game would need to be checked for each game. So I will add it in next season! I think I should remove sacks and tackles for loss as that is sort of redundant if yards allowed is there. My question is should I keep interceptions and defense TDs as part of the defense ranking? I would think that scoring on defense and causing turnovers is an indicator of a strong defense but I also don't want to flood the report with a ton of information if it's not useful. Especially considering offense ranking is determined by rush/pass yards and TDs only. It would be consistent to determine defense ranking by points allowed and yards allowed only. I love statistics as much as you do, but I am aware that they don't reflect the full reality of what happens on the field.
On that premise, the options you propose may be appropriate in some cases. For example, a sack is just a tackle for loss. And a tackle for loss is already reflected in the total yards allowed by the defense. However, it does give you an idea of how aggressive the defense is. The same goes for interceptions: an interception on first down is not the same as an interception on third down on a deep pass (almost the same as a punt). Actually, the most important stat is the points allowed by the defence. The rest of the stats are secondary. Maybe it would be good to set different weights for some stats in the final rating of the defense (points allowed more weight and the rest of the stats less weight, like you do in the Score in your current Power Ranking). In any case, with your permission, I will continue using the formulas you use to make the Power Rankings of the different leagues are homogeneous and conform to the same criteria. |

I'm glad you have getting use out of the power rankings for your Dragons 2 league and thanks for your thoughts! I agree that points allowed is the most important (I would throw yards allowed up there too) and the other stats are secondary - one could argue not even necessary.... I do like your idea of using a weight system for the different stats but part of me feels like that's overkill. I propose removing all defensive stats and add in yards allowed (Total/Pass/Rush). If nothing else just to keep it simple and to be consistent with how the offense rank is calculated. If you find value in the other stats I will add those back in with a weighted approach but that's what I'm thinking for now. In any case, I will be trialing the new power ranking for the playoffs this year and maybe we can use that time to tweak things a bit. Last edited on 2021-04-02 23:03:12 by joinesv |

I think you are doing a brilliant job, I looked at doing something similar, but my maths sucked so gave up.
To be honest do what ever calculations makes it easier for you, we all appreciate the effort you and others make in making the Monarchs league what it is. Just make sure we are above the Aliens at end of season i can leave the brown paper bag with the used notes in the usual spot  |
