Nationalwide this seems to be a long reach ... no team of the MAC has real national power, so this looks more like a regional thing, which of cause is fine and THERE their games are of cause missed.  |

The MAC has made a couple major bowl bids in the last handful of years and have a bunch of stars and even a few future hall of famers in the NFL. I'm certainly not biased and most definitely did not attend one of these Midwestern US schools. Go NIU!
The conference in general is one of the weaker ones, their top end is usually quite good and can compete at a very high level with the top rated teams, but the middle and bottom is amongst the worst in the nation. Notable hall of famers (current and future) from the MAC include, Khalil Mack (aptly named), Ben Roethliaberger, Randy Moss, Antonio Gates, Jason Taylor, Joe Staley, Antonio Brown (before he went insane), and Jack Lambert. |

Don't get me wrog, I love the MAC.
And for sure they did create some great players. But this conference usually has no national attention what I see here in Germany. Power 5 + American a bit + Mountain West a bit, that's it. The rest are just flies on the wind shield or annoyance. I remember NIU in the BCS bowl (Orange) in 2012/2013 and they were just not strong enough. I think the Orange Bowl guys would have loved to see a different team, but had to take NIU because of the BCS rules. |

The MAC successfully branded itself as midweek snack of college football with exciting offense and minimal defense. They got extra exposure and TV contracts but in general fans didn't take the teams seriously. I was at that orange bowl game and it's exactly as you say. Nobody wanted to go, I got tickets on the 40 12 rows deep for $15 surrounded by rich FSU alums. They spent the first half making fun of me but the place got dead silent at the end of the 3rd when NIU was threatening. Unfortunately, they had some bad plays from that point and it put the game out of reach. But it was a great showing by the MAC and they were within striking distance in a game all pundits said would be a blowout. |
