I'm not sure how the FB got past the 5-man DL when they all got past their blocks:
7:00 3 and goal to go on opp 4, Emanuel Thomsen (OC) snaps the ball to Hugh Pagán (QB), hands off to Ted Lindman (FB/R), he starts running over the center,
Blocking:
Emanuel Thomsen (OC) missed to block Mihály Rusli (NT), Nathaniel Mcbride (OG/R) missed to block Chad Mcdonough (DT/L), Almondo Pierre-Louis (OG/L) missed to block Mikkel Hansen (DT/R), Ricard Ripoll (OT/R) missed to block Tyson Bean (DE/L), Hatari Obi (OT/L) missed to block Caner Kukucka (DE/R), DLine has 5 members in shape after blocking
Caner Kukucka (DE/R) breaks through, Ted Lindman (FB/R) tackled by Sunnatilla Bakaev (MLB), forward progress: 4 yards (Shotgun 4 WR vs. 5-3-3)

Sometimes OL "miss" a block by offering one side to the DL. If this is done right, a nice gap is created. Maybe I did not get the question right, but for me this looks like a well executed play.

For me, this doesn't make sense at all. If an O-lineman "misses" his block, then he did not accomplish what he was attempting to do, or that the play called for, and he will hear about it from his coaches after the game in his grading and during the film session. You are definitely right, Pete, that linemen will voluntarily give up one side, but this voluntary action is purposeful and not a "miss". Like you said, "If this is done right". Well, I would argue that if it "is done right", then it is definitely not missed, it is successful. I can see a back possibly slipping through if one, maybe two linemen mess up, but if all five or your linemen miss their blocks?!....well, we all know very well what happens...a loss in the backfield, not a four yard gain. Why check blocks if EVERY lineman can mess up and it makes no difference?

I was on both sides ... oliner and stats guy. There was no chance for me as a stats guy to see if the OL was giving up on purpose, or because of a miss. We would have recorded a miss for both plays.
