I'm still not sure if I understood this whole dilemma correctly.
In a scrimmage today I had this situation: "8:37 Rico Winkler (P) punts the ball from own 46 for 40, Ethan Seaman (KR/C) is returning the ball, Andrew Roth (G/R) missed the tackle,Vishaq Soni (TE/R) missed the tackle,Sokratis Apostolou (TE/L) missed the tackle,Ilhan Müller (OT/L) missed the tackle,Xing-fu Soon (OT/R) missed the tackle,tackled by Rico Winkler (P), this was a 48 yards return" It does not occur often, frankly, but isn't it a given that all these players miss a -> tackle <- if they are not good at -> tackling <- because their main skill in the Offensive Line is -> blocking <-? Yesterday in the League game,
12:33 Catalin Dinea (P) punts the ball from own 42 for 35, Lev Kalashnikov (KR/C) is returning the ball, Wiljan Janmaat (G/R) missed the tackle,Fabien Poulain (TE/R) missed the tackle,Radu Petrache (TE/L) missed the tackle,Federico Vera (OT/L) missed the tackle,Boyd Leslie (OT/R) missed the tackle,tackled by Catalin Dinea (P), this was a 46 yards return The formation and the players are set ok, because when you punt the ball you need people who protect the P, but if the G does not tackle the KR, then things like this may happen. I also had problem on kickoffs, this is an example from the Supercup on monday 15:00 Sergiu Berechet (K) kicks the ball for 64, Jens Hundsperger (KR/L) returns, breaks the tackle by Dinu Bicaz (STT), breaks the tackle by Joachim Hoffman (STT), Lou Benner (G/R) missed the tackle,tackled by Sergiu Berechet (K), this was a 58 yards return, offense is on the field now, 1 and 10 on opp 41 All the players are defensive players with tackling. |

I think that not only tackling or blocking are important for Special Teams (ST). I feel that Speed and (maybe) Agility takes a big part on ST "efficiency". |

Don't get too deep into something we don't know.
Those kind of plays can happen on any level and they are based simply on random math, in which some skills, and we don't know in detail which, are involved. It's also not clear how the calculations are done, like in a role playing game, when someones offense skills are whatever added up and multiplied and then the defense skills of the others are done in a similar way or totally different, but at the end those 2 numbers are compared and who ever has the bigger one wins and it's a hit or a block. It could be that the runners speed and carry are weighted against the gunners speed and tackling, or all numbers are crunched up and then compared, it's not known. I think what happens is, calculations are done and something similar as the rpg compares happen and then it's a tackle or a miss and it's clear that if the opponent has skill X in average and you have as example 50% less, the calculations will be more likely in the favor of the opponent than in yours. If they levels are almost equal, still the random numbers which do go in in every calculations can lead to a miss-miss-miss-miss-whatever-TD scenario, even on elite level. As an advice I can only give, put your best blockers, FB, TE, OL in the STBL list and your best tackler, LB, CB, SF in your STT list and G list. Speed is likely very important, so not to slow on the tacklers, but beside that ... it's luck. |

I'm curious why so many players that are on the market or in the draft lack agility, though... but I guess the point's to have at least something to coach up, no? The 20 year olds in the academy, can you give them a contract the 1st day of the new season or do you have to do that before last day of current?
