Last Power Ranking of season 44.
Power Ranking - Dragons 1 - Week 17 Headlines: - Mülheim Seahawks move up to #1 for the first time all season. - Guns&Roses (#2) and Panthers (#3) complete the podium. - Same teams as last week in Top 10. - Biggest raise for LoneStar Armadillos (from #16 to #13). And the most importantly: they will play playoffs. - Biggest drop for Viper (from #12 to #16). And most importantly: they are out of playoffs. - Best team in our Power Ranking out of playoffs: Tilburg Torpedos (#10). - Worst team in our Power Ranking playing playoffs: Deventer Devils (#14). Next week first round of playoffs. - Jackalopes (#5 in our Power Ranking) vs Alert Polar Bears (#12). - LoneStar Armadillos (#13) vs Deventer Devils (#14). - Cargese Dolphins (#7) vs Gardians (#6). - Budapest Janitors (#8) vs Nottingham Outlaws (#9). I was ranked 4th and defeated Panthers who were ranked 1st. I ended up dropping 1 spot to 5th.
Werewolves were ranked 6th and defeated 7th ranked Budapest and the werewolves jumped up to 4th. Seems like there is probably an anomaly that needs a tweek in your power ranking scheme. Last edited on 2021-09-26 19:28:11 by punch drunk |

But Werewolves' score went from 79.74 to 81.06 (only 0.03 more than Jackalopes). Their opponent was weaker (bad for their PR score) but Jackalopes got many offensive yards and moved from #4 to #1 in yds/game (very good for the score). That was enough to improve his global score. Anyway, you're right: sometimes it seems like the Power Ranking is nonsense. But it all depends on the factors we are including in the score calculation and the importance we give to each one. I also think that whatever formula we use, we'll always find examples that tell us that this formula is not the right one. Which team is better? The one that wins more games? and if their opponents are weaker? then, we look at the stats? and what do we count? passing yards? rushing yards? touchdowns? ... and what importance do we give to each one in the score? Too many questions for which I don't have an answer. I've been thinking for some time about not taking into account the ranking (from 1 to 32) of a team for each stat. Instead, I'm thinking of calculating the relative position of each stat with respect to the minimum and maximum of all teams: 100 to the maximum, 0 to the minimum and the relative value between 0 and 100 to the rest. This way I hope that there won't be so many "jumps" in the score for a small change in a stat. What do you think? PS: I would also like to read any other proposition you may have. |

Not a thing nonsense about your ranking. Nice work!
Bout the only things that jumps out at me and I do not know if it's in your calculations are total point Difference (which is the end sum of all game results) and Defensive touch downs. (Which directly impact not only the score but offensive possession and the resulting yards of your opponent and your defense time on field and increase in those totals). The def TD's do skew all the per game stats. The Werewolves certainly had opponents with higher win %. So maybe I was rated higher than I shoulda been. Don't know. But again nice work.
