On Monday I decided to put (for the first time) 3-1-7 defense on 3rd down when offense is playing Shotgun 4WR and there is more than 10 yards to go.
Assuming that each WR will have his CB to cover him (since in 3-3-5 I am pretty sure that one CB is covering both WR on his side since I never saw first tackle by OLB on WR) plus one FS for each side to help in that cover. I am always looking for a pass without blitzing. But I believe that MLB is just wondering around in that case after these two games I played, he does not drop to cover. And what are results: 1. 3rd & 17 - interception by my defense 2. 3rd & 11 - 15 yards pass (first CB missed tackle, second one get it), new first down 3. 3rd & 15 - 17 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down 4. 3rd & 12 - 11 yards pass (first CB missed tackle, second one get it) 5. 3rd & 11 - 15 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down 6. 3rd & 17 - 19 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down 7. 3rd & 20 - 23 yards pass (first CB missed tackle, second one get it), new first down 8. 3rd & 12 - 11 yards pass (CB made tackle) 9. 3rd & 12 - 16 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down 10. 3rd & 11 - 10 yards pass (CB made tackle) So 10 plays for: 1 interception 9 completed passes for 137 yards or 15.2 yards per pass when you are playing with 8 guys as pass protection NONE INCOMPLETE PASS (ok there is almost no pressure on QB, but he is throwing at 8 guys in the backfield)!!!!! My question is: what are FSs doing? Where are they in all of those plays? And trust me, my guys are smart, very very fast, pretty strong, with main skills at minimum 42. |

Well the engine doesn't quite accurately represent effectivenesses and reality of some formations.
Blame it on very very soft zone play. Last edited on 2021-08-25 20:55:18 by punch drunk |

Interesting topic, I also always found the 317 to be incredibly soft.
What directions where those plays thrown to? |

Can you check? It seems to me that also in 3-1-7 like in 3-3-5 the CB outside is covering both WR and you have two CB inside as backup instead two OLBs. Did you blitz out of 3-1-7? Play by play would be: 1. 3rd & 17 - interception by my defense (CB/L made interception, WR/R target, outer right) 2. 3rd & 11 - 15 yards pass (first CB missed tackle, second one get it), new first down (CB/L missed, CB/Li made, WR/Ri target, inner right) 3. 3rd & 15 - 17 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down (CB/L made tackle, WR/R target outer right) 4. 3rd & 12 - 11 yards pass (first CB missed tackle, second one get it) (CB/L missed, CB/Li made, WR/Ri target, inner right) 5. 3rd & 11 - 15 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down (CB/R made tackle, WR/Li target, inner left) 6. 3rd & 17 - 19 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down (CB/R made tackle, WR/L target, outer left) 7. 3rd & 20 - 23 yards pass (first CB missed tackle, second one get it), new first down (CB/R missed, CB/Ri made, WR/L target, outer left) 8. 3rd & 12 - 11 yards pass (CB made tackle) (CB/R made tackle, WR/L target, outer left) 9. 3rd & 12 - 16 yards pass (CB made tackle), new first down, (CB/R made tackle, WR/Li target, inner left) 10. 3rd & 11 - 10 yards pass (CB made tackle), (CB/R made tackle, WR/Li target, inner left) So you are absolutely right!!!! First tackle always by CB/R or CB/L no matter that it was inner or outer pass. So CB/Li and CB/Ri are just watching how play will develop no matter there is WR in front of them. And I not know what to say except that this formation sucks. But this is something that Pete must change, no way playing 4 CBs and always only 2 CBs are responsible for all 4 WR. I suppose that it is the same thing for DIME formation. Last edited on 2021-08-25 22:33:26 by Dumbarajko |

After I tested a year ago I found this formation to be a prevent defense. It's supposed to be soft.

I rarely use this formation because I assumed that to be the case. Prevent, as some may not know, is only intended to prevent LONG plays. Like at the end of a half/game when your opponent is trying to pass deep/pass medium. Allowing 15yd passes sounds about right. |

I think that defensive formations with 4 CBs need to have an ouststanding CB AC, you have only a 76 EXP 3. It would be interesting seeing what happen if you blitz 75% LB or 75% SF Again without a good AC SF maybe also the SF blitz cannot work properly... In my opinion using this kind of formations is very risky in case your opponent rush... Last edited on 2021-08-25 22:38:52 by PJRAVENS |
