Manta Rays Rule the Private Cup Afternoon at Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH STADIUM — In a Friendly Cup engagement played before no public gallery, the Manta Rays traveled to meet the Yorkshire Sea-Owls and proved the experts had not misplaced their pencils. Under the sponsorship banner of Underdog Sportswear — “Because everyone has a little dog in them” — the away side delivered a stern, polished performance in the old-fashioned manner: sharp passing, timely defense, and a pocketful of interceptions.
The afternoon opened with Manta Rays quarterback Dusty Humes moving smartly, using Dobri Straub, Isaiah Braga, Dwayne Brent, and Tony Pittman to march deep into Yorkshire ground. Yet the Sea-Owls struck first in spirit when Jake Burns intercepted Humes near the goal line and returned the ball handsomely, setting up Gordon Hendrix and the home attack. Hendrix then found Zackary Greenlee at the doorstep for Yorkshire’s touchdown, with Vincent Nunes handling the kick that followed.
The Manta Rays did not rattle. Humes guided another response, mixing throws and keeps until Dwayne Brent gathered a pass in the end zone. Later, the Rays stretched the field again, and Isaiah Braga finished a tidy drive with a scoring catch. Between those moments, the Yorkshire Sea-Owls came within inches of another fine answer, only to be turned away on fourth down at the goal line by a stubborn Manta Rays front.
Turnovers became the grammar of the contest. Hakim Mahmood intercepted Hendrix in the first half and then made a habit of it, later snaring pass after pass with the confidence of a man catching laundry from a summer line. Issam Ismail also stepped in front of a Hendrix throw, while Pascal Mallet gave Yorkshire cause to cheer by intercepting Olav Haraldsen near the goal line and later picking off Humes as well. There were no fumbles to share the marquee; the interceptions had the stage all to themselves.
The third quarter saw the Manta Rays settle into control. Errol Keller supplied a field goal, and the Rays kept Yorkshire boxed in with sound tackling and a steady diet of short gains. When Humes left briefly with a sprained ankle, Olav Haraldsen entered and kept the machinery moving, though Mallet’s interception halted one promising march. Humes later returned, while Mikhail Kozel and Ilie Beniuc also reappeared after injury spells, giving the match its share of sideline drama.
In the final quarter the visitors broke the matter open. Haraldsen found Dwayne Brent for a touchdown, then Klemens Kelley added another scoring catch after Ismail’s interception had handed the Rays excellent field position. Dusty Humes, back in command, later directed a muscular drive capped by Dobri Straub’s touchdown reception. Yorkshire continued to pass gamely through Hendrix, with Edmund Haskell, Zackary Greenlee, Alfonso Lange, Ariel McPherson, and Min Dongbang all seeing work, but Mahmood’s thievery repeatedly closed the door.
So the private Cup match ended with the favored away team fully vindicated, the home side left to ponder missed chances at the goal line and a long parade of intercepted throws. Final score: Manta Rays 38 - Yorkshire Sea-Owls 7.
