The World Cup is in its final phase, and I had to wipe a few tears away from my face already: ireland and France out, after two fantastic quarter final matches vs AllBlacks and Springbocks. And this is my call for the final as well, with AllBlacks taking it home.

We will see ...

South Africa was a great team. They changed their game to adapt to our weaknesses and despite France being better, they managed to stay close in first half. Then they played smart in the second one and abused a referee who decided to be very tolerant with the rules. Not saying he favoured them, but with another ref, we would probably have won.

Now I believe (and hope) they will destroy England who did not show anything but seriousness against a scandalous Fidji team that can not respect basic rucks rules. At this level, I was shocked. Even when I was playing at a student level it was cleaner.

I see Argentina going home with 40 points and an exiting final with NZ.

Despite the huge disappointment for France, which again was in my honest opinion the best team, this WC showed some of the greatest games I saw in my life. It also showed some of the worst when Elite teams played the small nations. But those 2 quarters were a love song to the game.

When it comes to being shocked, I was seriously shocked by the amount of chat delivered by numerous players (not captains) towards the referees. When I felt in love with rugby some years ago, one trigger was the respect for each other, and the total respect for the referee. Is that gone, a bit? Or was it the importance of the games combined with some lose nervs? Inacceptable, in my opinion.

The problem is that before, once the decision was taken, it was final. Now with the replays, if the video ref sees someone complaining, he will think “maybe I missed something” and he goes check.

So if I do not think they respect less the ref, they do respect less his calls.

Overall, I see it as still a progress. We got rid of many sucker moves and with the players being stronger and faster, it was necessary to protect their health a bit.

In the French championship, you can see many 10 meters penalties to teams who talk too much this way. But on this WC I did not see it happen on the games I watched.

Maybe it would be solved by introducing technology to the game.
In Football there are not many discussions, perhaps due to the support of video and assistant referees in the boxes.
I'm not saying that we should "Americanize" rugby, just that we are in the 21st century and it would be stupid to want to play as if we were in the last century.

Again, with another red, England would have won. This ref, the same as against France, allows things that 90% of the other refs do not. There were 2 or 3 situations that could have led to a penalty on this last possession.

But the South Africans played it perfectly. They probably get ref a lot by the guy when they play Australia in there south championship and they must know exactly what can be done or not with him.
