I know there is a lot of discussion about the current situation, because of October 7th. But does anyone actual think there is a long term solution to this situation and if so, what is it?

The two states solution seems to be the only one. But with the current nationalist government in Israel and the terrorist party Hamas in Palestine, it seems impossible to achieve.

There will never be any agreement regarding Jerusalem, as all parties involved have some sacred locations there |

The current solution is no sustainable one, and the two states solution has some "dont like it" stance from the people. So, let the people decide. Seems to be that there are other solutions, like one state, with both an arabic and jewish government ruling their people, but a central govt above it for things like military, foreign policy and so on. This way, people can freely move, because of "one state". And people have some saying in the politics, because of the arabic and jewish government bodies.
It is not on the politicians to decide it, not on terrorists, and not on foreigners. It is a people's decision. At least it should be. I found this is Belfast, and there is nothing to add Source: https://redzoneaction.org/football/images/media/5e439956407789e2e3fddd2e31c8c572.jpg Last edited on 2023-12-09 11:17:14 by pete |

Sorry to be a dark cloud on an already dreary subject, but I do not believe there is a long term solution. There's too much hate and religious fervor in play. Yes, we (and all sane people, including most of the residents of that part of the world,) would all like peace to reign so all can live their lives according to the dictates of their own free will and conscience. But I'm afraid the long-term reality for Israel is periods of relative peace punctuated with moments of extreme violence, until/unless such a massive conflict breaks out that one side or the other is virtually annihilated. (Got armeggedon?)
Even if you negotiate a settlement to create some form of government or two-state situation, there's still going to be the fringe elements that aren't happy with it, that aren't even close to happy if any of the enemy exists. You can't negotiate or settle with that type of rationale. Terrorists will still exist and create chaos. You can either try to eradicate them as Israel seems bent on doing, (an causing all that collateral damage,) and as the USA tried to do after the 9/11 attack. But good luck with that! It just fuels the fires. But what else do you do? Sit back and wait for them to attack over and over? There's no placating fanatics, so you're stuck between all out war against them or always being on your guard, waiting for the next blow to land. So long-term solution? I don't believe it exists for this scenario. |
