I thought when you had "pass" in your playbook the QB automatically aimed for the 1st down with his pass.
In my game today this happened: 3rd & 10: Pass for 7 yards 3rd & 9: Pass for 6 yards 3rd & 4: Pass for 2 yards 3rd & 7: Pass for 3 yards 3rd & 10: Pass for 7 yards 5 times in the same game! Is there something I can change in my playbook to avoid this? Is it just bad luck? |

Assuming comparable player skill, it probably has more to do with either a bad roll on the play or a formation mismatch.

I looked at the game report and either the QB was being hurried (mention of DE player breaking through) or he threw the ball and the WR was tackled by the CB. I would suggest that their defense had one over on you. If the WR would have evaded the tackle of the CB you would have made 10+ yards gain. Anyone correct me if I am wrong as I am by no means an expert at this game. |

My point is that I thought the QB passed to a WR past the first down marker.

My thought is that QBs are throwing just short of the first down. As opposed to right at the first down like in last season's engine. The QBs have higher percentage completions but not auto first downs anymore. Not sure why the change but it seems to be the change we got.

I can't compare it very well to what we had before. My team wasn't competitive enough then for me to make that evaluation. But, for now at least, pressure can reduce the yards at catch. Carrying can help make up the difference a bit, as well as better formation matchups.

In the real world passes are often thrown short of the 1st down with the hopes/expectations/plan for the receiver to get the extra yards.

I think the answer is that the QB wants to pass to someone past the first down marker but often has to aim for someone a little short and relies on yac to get the first down. So, on a 3 and 4 he passes to someone 3 yds downfield with the hope they can run for the last yard after they catch the ball. Sometimes it works, other times the defender is right there to make the tackle. As Drac mentioned, a little bit of it probably has to do with the QB needing to get rid of the ball quickly and so he throws a dump off pass to the guy the defense is purposely leaving open short of the down marker (just like in real football). I also think part of it has to do with the way the engine is set up. You'll notice that the average pass distance varies based on the amount to the first down. Basically, you won't get many 13 yd passes on 3rd and 1 but on a 3rd and 10 you'll see many more because the QB has to aim deeper to have a chance at a first down. This leads to your QB throwing short in all sorts of 3rd down situations since the WR's route distances depends on what is needed.
To solve this problem, there isn't a whole lot you can do because, again, I think much of it has to do with the way the engine is set up to mimic real football. For 3rd and long you could set your playbook to medium pass ![]() Edit: Wow, took to long to type this up a couple more people posted before me and brought up some of my points.
