As you all know, we are using Google to place Ads on our page. We do that to allow non-supporters using this page for free. It helps us to cover some of the monthly server costs.

However, Google is forcing me to add a so called Consent dialogue, or it would stop displaying Ads from January 2024.

Personal opinion: I really dislike adding just another consent dialogue.

What is your opinion?

Option "Add the dialogue": we add the dialogoe, and create an even more worse user experience

Option "Skip the ads": we get rid of such aps completely. At the same time we would have to think about the policy of playing the game for free. I have no idea yet, but one idea is to convince more users buying supporter accounts, or offer a less pricy "Light Supporter" - but this discussion should not happen today.

Option "Something different": I am more than happy to read about your ideas in the comments

u p d a t e 1: to make somthing more clear about finances. About half of the users own a supporter. The income creates about 120% of what we need to cover all RZA related costs - without any additional development of course. If we skip ads and therefore skip this income, we could still run the game as per today. However, I was always open and told, RZA would run as long as the costs are covered. Without having the income from ads, the point where the costs are not covered by supporters is coming nearer. And this is - for the moment, the one and only issue. Yes, it is for the moment a warning only.

Another way to cover the costs even longer is to lower the server costs, which is the major share of the all the costs connected to running RZA. So switching servers to a "less resources" hardware is of course an option to discuss. But, this comes with a downside. The function that makes it expensive to run RZA is the game history. We keep very detailed stats from all games from season 1, if a human was involved in such a game. This sums up to several GB of data. We could get rid of that data. The result would be having no play by play and player stats anymore for each season we decide to get rid of. So if we chose the half the amount of data in the store, we would have to get rid of such data from season 26 and older.

This is no way I would like to go, but of course this is an option.

I believe no internet game can survive if there is no option to play for free.

No one pays for something he even doesn't know he will like.

So I am always to have free game for new users.

210 users right now, I wouldn't like to drop to like 100.

I picked "add the dialogue", but it means for me:
- the best option in my view is "something different" if it meant support for players with no supporter, but right now there are no specific "something different"s to pick
- at the same time "skip the ads" is the worst option (I agree with Dumbarajko above) until it doesn't mean there is a "something different" to support players without a supporter

If the explanation above means I am in fact voting for "something different" - please re-assign my vote, Pete.

(I presume the last option means "I don't care", so that's the only one I definitely don't pick. )

EDIT: In case it's hard to understand my narrative:
I'd like to pick "something different" but I didn't because I have no idea what it could be.
Of the other 3 options "add the dialogue" seems the best.

What would the "Add dialogue" look like, once consent is agreed would it look the same for the non supporters? Or would it keep asking for consent every time you logged in?

The less it takes over the webpage and less it annoys, the better

I guess, it pops up from time to time, based on the fact if the user owns a google account and what cookie policy was set in the browser.

Pete as you may remember the trouble I had with the ads, but then we saw reason..
My own view is a human wants to join the RZA game - what would they get to try the game out - if you take away the free turn? Most older players would say OK I still can pay and play.. But I have and know people that thought Why should I pay to play when free- - I don't have an answer or what to vote for.. yet..

Me too.

Since Google changes this because of regulation / legislation, I guess this won't solve anything, because other ad-providers will do the same

@jpnwrt: no worries, I got it.

It wouldnt be that way, since new players see no ads at all. Reason: they get a few days of a free supporter, and supporters do not see any ads at all

I agree with Dumbarajko above. I would add that you would likely also lose a good portion of supporter accounts, maybe even hastening the end of RZA, when supporters drop out because so few people are playing. I think it may have a cascading effect. I'd say at a minimum, keep the ads.

My alternative suggestion is to raise rates for supporter accounts. And maybe you do that anyway and still keep the ads! I don't know what portion of the supporter income pays for the expenses. I was a little confused when Pete explained it, but this game is pretty inexpensive folks. Consider the number of hours you enjoy the game. I would gladly pay a little more for what I feel I get out of the game. I don't know where else I can get hundreds of hours of entertainment for 20 Euros (or it's U.S. equivalent) a year!

Anyway, that's my opinion.
