To me, the bonus requested to keep a retiring player on one more season feels too steep, especially with the new exhaustion rules. So it seems like the only reason you'd use this is if you have emotional attachment to a given player. Or maybe if you just had a real stand-out that you can't find a replacement for in a key position.
Usually you can find a similar player on the market for far cheaper than what is being asked by the retiring player, so it just doesn't make financial sense to bring them back.

We had this challenge in S53 with our 4* TE announcing retirement, but offering to not retire for said bonus. We needed him, though, since we had secured another season in the Elite and all the back-up TEs were not up to par yet.

But then he did not only cost that bonus, he additionally cost A LOT more for the pending 1+1-year-contract because this SOB did get that much better in that season so he got a 4,5*-rating. He performed very good in the last two seasons overall, although there is decline visible.

The investment did pay off in the end, I guess, although there was and is an emotional component to it, too... with him being a cornerstone of the rise of the HAMBURG SEA LIONS from the very beginning

Maybe it's just me and my almost 900.000.000 in cash, but I do always prolong my players.
They are usually the best on the team, 5* exp, trained to the max I wanted.
They want to play for some extra money? Here, eat it.
Cheaper options are relative.
My Kicker wanted 2.8 million to not retire.
Fine, it's a bit more than 100K per u p d a t e spread over the season.
Expensive, sure, but where is the kicker on the same level I can buy and even if I can buy him, I have to pay 1 million minimum, more likely 2.5 miilion to get one on that level. And if he is under 30 I pay 30% more than my kicker now.
And my 50/50 DE wants 3.2 million.
Fine, 150K per update, if only for one season staying, but there is a chance he will play more. And where do I get a 50/50 5* maxed out DL? For that price?

Fine, you don't like the option, don't use it.

Where is all the money? I remember a time I had to change the variable range of "virtualmoney" in my database because of you, when int32 was not enough and you had more than 2 billion in your account. However, I was burning about 4 billion in a blink of an eye when you went outside the range with your money and your account switched to -2 billion.

I should own that trophy "guy who burned most amount of money in short time", not this Space Karen.

If the next player in line is good enough, I did not use to offer the money. But I think I remmeber once paying 8 or 9 millions for a very valuable player. Considering I had more than 500 millions in the bank at the time and that I am about to retire with almost 600 (I did sell for about 100 since I took the decision), it was peanuts.

I'm not in this situation just yet Olband, but if i have to chose i will have to see first if i have a reasonable back-up for the player.
If yes, i won't pay.
If no, i will pay for sure for an extra season.
There is also what Jack said (if that player is GOLD), then perhaps you might want to hold on to him for a little longer.

Just like others if there is a replacement ready he will be off.ลพ

If there is lack of money he will be off.

But if there is no replacement and there is a lot of money in the bank he will stay.

I did that with Jakลกa last season.

This season I will not do it with Kukucka.
