Thinking more after my random suggestion, an item for discussion that I'm sure has to have come up before, but don't know how to find it:
Why do defenses have to choose either a run or pass defense? most of the time defenses have to be ready for either. Can't we have an option in the middle, a neutral standard defense? This would mean not being as aggressive against an option, but also not being as prone to be burned by the other. Managers would still have the option to pick one when they felt the situation or scouting warranted it. |

You maybe cannot choose a third formation, but you can operate from a base defense.
I have the lowest line in my defensive playbook set to "Pass: 4-4-3; Rush: 4-4-3" and formulated the exeptions for this rule above this line. It's constantly evolving and expanding, but the base defense is always there. |

I would rather have an option like key on pass / run and when you key on run you are more likely to get a TFL and the first tackling attempt of the LBs would be nearer to the line of scrimmage but at the same time the effectivness against the pass would suffer and vice versa with keying pass

When this neutral formation will kick in? I understand that if you set the preference for passing this will be the formation deployed for the "x" first plays until your team "learn" that it should go for the running defense. So I imagine this neutral formation will be used after "y" plays (y < x) and then, if needed, after "z" plays (probably z=y or close to it) it will go for the other type.
