I lived in San Diego and my perspective is a bit different. I've watched for 15+ years as the city & county and the Chargers have failed to come up with a stadium plan. The fault is on both sides for this.

But basically, the it comes down to the fact that the people (and therefore the politicians) of San Diego don't want to spend a lot of public money to build a new stadium that would be on par with the rest of the NFL. The recent vote to raise the TOT tax (on visitors staying in hotel rooms and renting cars etc.) only garnered 42-43% approval (required 2/3 to pass). That's okay...if we want to spend the money on other things, that's our choice.

This fact has become pretty obvious to the Chargers ownership. They now have the option to move to a stadium that is competitive with the NFL standards. They're doing that. Although it's tragic for the true Charger fans in San Diego, the majority of San Diego is pretty lukewarm about the team.

I don't think cities are required to subsidize sports teams. But like any business, you can't fault the Chargers for making the best economic decision for their ownership. Plenty of cities are willing to subsidize sports teams - - just look at the Raiders to Las Vegas deal.

At least that's how I see it...

Stadium doesn't buy fans, if the chargers become the NFL equivalent of the LA Clippers, the move isn't worth it

I can see both sides of the argument but I side more with the city & county & the fans - no NFL team is going broke these days, as owning a franchise is a licence to print money. Now I don't know who needs to offer the other better terms, or how the negotiations have failed to resolve over 15+ years, but NFL owners tend to look at the bottom line over all things and perhaps after all these years Dean Spanos has decided enough is enough.

And if some Chargers fans are lukewarm about the team - the fact that the stadium was full of silver and black at the last home game against the Raiders spoke volumes - that probably won't change if they move to LA. The Chargers have been a team in a rival city for all but one year of their history, so is there any real interest in them in LA, no matter how shiny a new stadium? There's no guarantees the Rams will be a draw, let alone a second LA team. History shows that two teams in LA (heck, even one) didn't work too well in the past. Its changed times now, there's more money and more people with an interest in football, but the old "grass is always greener..." saying comes to mind. What point in a new stadium in a strange town with no-one to fill it?

The NFL is apparently trying to save the situation (again) at this late stage, but we'll see. I'm gonna miss those Powder Blue Chargers if they move somewhere else, won't be the same.

At this time last year, the Clippers were the 5th highest valued team in the NBA. If the Chargers became the 5th highest valued team in the NFL, their owners will be very happy.

Exactly...the Clippers were poorly support in San Diego and played in the outdated San Diego SportS Arena. The moved to LA and played for many years in that the LA Sports Arena which wasn't much better. Donald Sterling ran the team with a tight fist and they often struggled on and off the court.

Then LA builds the Staples center for the Lakers, LA Kings (hockey) and Clippers to play at. LA Live and the Microsoft/Nokia Theater move in next door with a 7k seat music concert arena.

Sterling has some issues with his girlfriend and some racist recordings and is forced to sell the team for a whopping $2 billion to Steve Ballmer. Jackpot!

BTW, the Clippers are drawing slightly more fans this season that the Lakers.

I'm sure this isn't lost on the Chargers ownership. The new stadium that Stan Kroenke is building will be a palace. There is a bunch of other stuff that's going to be built around it...I think they have 300 acres or something from old Hollywood Park. From a financial standpoint, why wouldn't the Chargers move there? I don't expect the Chargers to be imbraced initially by Los Angeles, but LA will eventually adopt them. Almost ever franchise in LA came from somewhere else...and there are all doing well: Dodgers (Brooklyn), Lakers (Minnesota), Clippers (San Diego), Rams (Cleveland/St. Louis) etc.

I can't really answer your question simply. Details about Donald Sterling and his ownership of the Clippers are unlike anything I've ever read about. Absolute madness.

For Europeans in a culture dominated by football it seems alien to move teams. But football has a much deeper rooted link to communities and a system of promotion and relegation. There has been on occasion a team relocate but almost always a small team well outside the top league. American sports are much more iof a closed door to outsiders so if you want your city to have a team either the city or a very wealthy individual has to bank roll it. I feel for the genuine charger fans of San Diego but cnnlao understand why they s a city te not related to front up the money required to keep them. From both the owners perspective and the NFL who have been pushing for LA teams it make business sense as well.
