Seems like a lot of the better teams are blitzing - - some almost at 75% in most situations.

When do you blitz? Down & Distance? Or certain formations?

What formations do you blitz out of?

Still seems like 3-4-4 with a blitzing LB is much more effective at getting to the QB than 4-4-3 without blitzing. DE are pretty ineffective.

Speedy LBs are the key? Any other skill? Intelligence? Tactical skills?

I generally blitz 75% on most passing plays, but never on a run (unless I was tricked by the opponent of course). There are a few passing situations where I blitz less often.

I'm like Rock, I never blitz on running plays if I can help it. When defending passing plays, my goal is to attack offenses with a free rusher, so I'm a 75% blitzer vs most passes. I prioritize speed at every position and believe that most teams limit their blitzing success because they don't have fast athletes across the board in their defensive front-7.

I think gnikeoj might be right about the front-7 speed thing. Me DEs have been monsters and they have been very ineffective, while I have seen DEs on other teams get lots of tackles. My DTs are mostly slow guys. Probably the slow DTs are cancelling out the fast DEs

Pete once posted that the blocking calculation, "is a mix of single skills, skills per block unit, skills per defender-unit, and skills of the whole lines" and the difference between skills per block unit and skills per defender unit means "block unit ogl and otl vs der and dtr as example, but not the whole lines".

From the manual, I know that in order to create a sack, the blocking of the OL needs to be broken, so I've built my roster accordingly.

Saturday, I had 7 sacks (pretty good output for my team). All were from the MLB(s). What conclusions should I draw from this?

I usually play some combination of 3-4-4, 4-4-3, 5-3-3 and 3-3-5.

Thanks,

Steve

Your OLBs could have been attempting to defend inside passes, so against certain formations, only MLBs are available and free to blitz.

I usually try to keep as many LBs on the field as possible so I end up playing a 3-4 as base, but I really want to run a 4-3 Miami front. We can't change alignments so I can't play the 4-3 Over, but the theory of speed and upfield pressure aren't too difficult to implement through personnel. Unfortunately, I may never realize my dream because I'm so scared to switch to the 4-3 because of how bad everyone says that it is.

I thought blitzing LBs were randomly selected from the linebackers on the field. If you blitz an OLB, then there is kind of missing coverage over there. No?

For a while, there was a "feature" where a linebacker could be blitzing and get a pick. Pete said something about how it was because the engine didn't remove that LB from the list of possible pickers. I suspect both picks and blitzes might just randomly choose a guy from the unit of guys covering a specific part of the field. I've also seen my OLB sacking performance go up drastically when I used faster MLBs. Makes me think the LBs blitz as a unit and a random guy gets the sack. All just guesswork.
