Hmm.. great dictionary, @Rurik. You seem to have missed a couple( a pair?), though:

rugby / football
football / soccer

Just kidding. But seriously, I wonder what's the origin of "football" on _the other_ ( ) side of the Atlantic. To distinguish from playing the ball not on foot but, say, on horseback?

ps. Also wonder what's the take on the subject from the guys (we don't have any gals yet, do we? ) Down-Under. Would a third column be neccesary? A mix of the 1st and the 2nd?

And footie!

It's a football game. A match is something that breaks the camels back.

Football as a sport without formal rules has been played for 1000s of years without formal rules.

Over time areas developed different rule sets

Association Football is what everybody bar America knows as football. The term soccer comes from the asSOCiation part of the name. This ruleset was developed by yes, the football association.

Rugby football derives from the town Rugby at whose school, Rugby many if the early rules for it were developed. The Webb Ellis legend is largely disputed now by historians but its an enduring myth

australian rules football was developed by an Ex Rugby school pupil decided he didn't like some of the rules and so developed his.

American developed in a similar manner when some influential people changed the rules of Rugby they didn't like.

Nowhere uses the term soccer apart from America and those who did use it would be mocked in many areas. If you were to use the term Soccer in most English boozers you would get decked and then barred for life. The best you could hope for was many hurty words been thrown at you and it would be merciless and you would never be allowed to live it down, so don't do it, ever.
